Fun to make in childcare! A collection of easy origami ideas recommended for July

A summer of continuing hot days! In childcare, we also worry about things like children getting heatstroke, don’t we? At times like that, how about enjoying origami indoors? Here, we’ll introduce origami ideas that are perfect for July.

Most of the folding methods are relatively simple, so they’re easy for children to try.

Once you’ve folded them, try decorating the wall with them or using them for pretend play.

Origami helps expand creativity, so it’s highly recommended.

Please use this as a reference and enjoy your origami time!

Orihime and Hikoboshi

[Tanabata Decorations] Tanabata Origami: How to Make Orihime and Hikoboshi — Origami Orihime and Hikoboshi
Orihime and Hikoboshi

When it comes to July events, Tanabata comes to mind.

Let’s make Orihime and Hikoboshi, who joyfully reunite once a year.

They’re cute origami figures dressed in kimono, so they’re great to craft together with children.

The finished pieces highlight gender-specific details such as hairstyles, how the kimono is worn, and the position of the obi.

Add some sparkle with star accessories made from gold origami paper as well.

It might be nice to have boys fold Hikoboshi and girls fold Orihime.

fish

The sea and rivers are perfect for summer leisure, and kids have more chances to get close to fish.

So how about making an origami fish? Fold the paper into a triangle twice, open it once, and fold the corners toward the edges so the creases line up.

Next, fold both sides so the creases align with the top edge.

Continue folding until it forms a long, narrow hexagon, and finally make the tail fin to complete the fish.

If you make lots of colorful fish using different origami papers, it will look just like an origami aquarium!

eggplant

This is an origami eggplant that brings out the feeling of the season.

Here, we’ll make the body with purple paper and the calyx with black paper, then assemble them together.

Since eggplants are harvested from early summer, they convey a summery vibe.

If you also fold a paper basket and arrange several eggplants in it, it can serve as stylish decor.

In that case, making eggplants in both deep and light purple, or using both black and green calyxes, will give a more realistic look.

By the way, summer eggplants are often a deep purple.

paper lantern

Many children are probably looking forward to the summer festival.

As an idea to boost the festive mood, I’d like to introduce lantern origami.

In this project, you make the lantern part by shaping your favorite color of origami paper into a circle and then recreate the look by combining it with a frame made from black origami paper.

It looks lovely as is, but you can also write characters on the lantern and use it as a wall decoration for events.

You can draw illustrations to make it cute, or draw a face and turn it into a lantern ghost, too.

fireworks

[Origami] Easy! How to make fireworks (hanabi) / Summer origami / Kirie (paper cutting) Origami fireworks
fireworks

Fireworks are a quintessential symbol of summer.

Their vibrant colors instantly brighten up any space! Here, we’ll introduce paper fireworks made with origami—perfect for decorating children’s rooms or the walls of nurseries and kindergartens.

Just fold the origami and cut it into firework patterns.

Simply changing the way you cut creates fireworks with many different looks, so feel free to snip away however you like.

It’s exciting to see what kind of firework appears when you unfold the paper! When displaying them on a wall, using a different colored sheet of origami as the background can make them look even more festive.

wind chime

Wind chimes that bring a sense of coolness in summer.

It’s also fun to recreate them with origami.

First, use origami with a pattern you like to make the glass part.

Then thread a string through it and attach a paper strip at the bottom to finish.

Since it has a string, you can hang it anywhere, and when the wind blows, the strip flutters and feels refreshing.

Using Japanese-patterned origami or drawing on the strip will make it look even more like a real wind chime.

It’s also recommended to cut the origami into smaller pieces to make tiny wind chimes—they turn out adorably.

watermelon

[Cute Origami] Easy “Watermelon” Folding Method (Origami no Jikan) | Origami Watermelon (Easy)
watermelon

When it comes to summer fruits, watermelon is the classic choice.

Let’s make an origami watermelon using red and green origami paper.

First, crease the red paper along the diagonal.

With the red side facing down, fold the corners toward the center along the crease.

Once it forms a square, fold all four corners inward.

Do the same diagonal creasing with the green paper, then glue the red piece onto the green side so they align.

Finally, trim and tidy the edges of the green paper, fold the glued piece in half with the glued side facing up, and draw seeds with a black marker.

Your origami watermelon is complete!
