LOSERYonezu Kenshi

Kenshi Yonezu’s fifth major-label single, whose popularity is soaring like a bird in flight.

With its fast tempo and a structure that keeps the vocals going without a break, just keeping up is quite a challenge.

It’s a song that seems to sing about feelings of inferiority, yet despite its backward-looking tone, it’s also forward-looking, offering the intriguing sensation that makes its lyrics so compelling.

Six Trillion Years and an Overnight Storykemu

[HD] Six Trillion Years and One Night Story [IA Original Song / with PV] - KEMU VOXX
Six Trillion Years and an Overnight Storykemu

Released in December 2012, this is a classic, notoriously difficult Vocaloid song! It has a Japanese-style flavor, with a very relaxed intro that suddenly speeds up, and it’s packed with lyrics.

You’ll need to be mindful of stamina, lung capacity, and quickness, but it’s highly recommended if you like fast songs! A tip for singing the rapid-fire sections: don’t try to pronounce every single consonant—focus on clearly articulating the vowel sounds that carry the accents.

That makes it easier to lock into the rhythm and sing more lightly.

For fast-tempo songs, above all, you need to memorize the lyrics; otherwise at karaoke you’ll end up just chasing the words and kind of muddling through.

I recommend first being able to hum the melody, then adding the lyrics afterward!

Charlesbarūn

The Vocaloid song “Charles” has become very popular thanks to covers by many singers and artists—are you familiar with it? I always sing it in the original key, but it’s quite difficult! The range is C#3 to C#5, and it’s very high overall, but I especially find the parts in the chorus where the melody jumps up and down to be challenging.

There are also spots near the beginning of the A section where the notes rise.

For those sections, it feels good to produce the sound if you visualize the pitch you want and “hit the target” with your voice like shooting an arrow.

Also, the rhythm in the B section tends to rush, so try to keep the tempo by singing each note carefully.

Most Vocaloid songs are high, but if you’re confident in your high notes, you might be able to sing “Charles” in the original key—so give it a try!

Merry XmasBoA

It was released in 2004 as BoA’s 15th single.

It was BoA’s first Christmas song, was featured in an Audio-Technica commercial, and became a major hit.

The song spans a wide vocal range from low to high, and the high falsetto in the chorus makes it very challenging to sing.

This is a digital-only single performed by Kessoku Band, the in-story group that appears in the 2022 TV anime “Bocchi the Rock!”.

I love Kessoku Band’s rock songs too and often sing “Guitar, Loneliness and Blue Planet,” but “That Band” is really tough because the tempo is fast and the rhythm is very distinctive! I recommend listening closely to the track before trying to sing it.

The timing for clipping the words in the A section, the timing for sustaining notes in the chorus—once the melody starts, there aren’t any spots to rest, so rather than memorizing the whole thing in one go, I think it’s easier to grasp if you learn it bit by bit, melody by melody, which also helps keep it organized in your head.

Also, for the high notes like D5 and C5 in the last chorus, don’t pull the sound back—project your voice forward firmly! It’s like tossing it out with a burst of energy.

Try to keep that in mind!

Force Majeure / Vaundy: MUSIC VIDEO

This track was released as a digital-only single on January 22, 2020, and it gives the impression of “Only Vaundy could sing this!” I think you can broadly divide the song into two parts: the calmer first half and the latter half where the high notes really shine.

The range is very wide too, from A#2 to C5.

In the rap section of the first half, that relaxed feel is key.

Sing it coolly, but make sure your words are clear so it doesn’t turn into a mumble.

For the high notes starting from the chorus in the second half, lift your facial muscles to get ready, then project your voice as if aiming far into the distance! Since the high notes keep coming, that burst of energy—sheer momentum—is crucial.

When you nail this part, it feels amazing for both the singer and the listener! Vaundy has many challenging songs, so they’re really rewarding to practice.

Definitely give it a try!

BrotherhoodB’z

The tempo is relaxed, but if you don’t sing the melody’s rhythm with composure, you can lose track of it.

Especially the C section right before the guitar solo packs in a lot of words at a fast pace, and that’s where I often stumble.

Nail this part and the instrumental break into the final chorus becomes really dramatic! The chorus also has a string of high notes, and even with my high vocal range, a small mistake makes my voice crack right away.

The chorus part in the latter half shouldn’t be that difficult! If we can get a big sing-along going there, it’s sure to hype everyone up!
