Wall decorations of hot-air balloons made from familiar materials like origami paper, tissue paper, and construction paper feel warm and are perfect for a graduation ceremony.

We’ll introduce a variety of ideas, such as springlike designs adorned with cherry blossoms, colorful rainbow balloons, and balloons seen through a window.

Make it with foam parts! Hot air balloon decoration

Here’s a fun project where you can float kids’ favorite items together with a hot air balloon motif.

First, prepare a styrofoam ball and decorate it in any color you like.

Wrap twine around two bamboo skewers, insert them into the ball, and attach them with glue.

Glue the opposite ends of the skewers to a small, palm-sized flowerpot.

Next, insert a wire into the top of the ball, thread fishing line or string through it, and hang it from the ceiling to finish.

You can put in various things like stuffed animals, flowers, or sweets—just enjoy while being mindful of the weight.

Here’s an idea for a hot-air balloon craft that uses a paper plate as the balloon envelope.

Design it by gluing torn pieces of origami paper onto the plate.

Once the envelope is ready, attach it with ribbons to a paper basket decorated with drawings of the children, and it’s complete! Decorations for graduation ceremonies often include gifts from the children who are still enrolled.

Because torn-paper collage is accessible even for infants, everyone can participate in sharing their celebratory feelings.

While wishing the graduates a bright future, make colorful and wonderful hot-air balloons.

A cute hot air balloon wall decoration using paper cups.

First, cut a paper cup vertically in half.

Punch two holes near the top rim of the cup.

Next, thread chenille stems (pipe cleaners) through the holes and twist the ends to secure them to the cup.

Then decorate the back of a paper plate and the paper cup with colorful washi tape.

Finally, punch two holes in the paper plate as well, connect them with the chenille stems, and you’re done! Let’s support children’s futures, full of hope like balloons taking off into the wide sky.

Soaring balloons!

Here’s a decoration I highly recommend that kids can play with.

They’ll get to enjoy making a hot air balloon float with their own hands! First, cut a paper cup down to about half its height and use the side with the bottom.

Inside the paper cup, attach two straws diagonally, then attach an inflated balloon to the ends of the straws to make the balloon part of the hot air balloon.

On the outside of the paper cup, attach two short straws in the shape of the kanji “八” (like a wide V).

Thread a string—tipped with a straw at one end—through those straws, and you’re done.

If you hook the string onto something like a hook, you can make the hot air balloon float!

If you want to create lively decorations, we recommend this one with lots of hot air balloons floating under clouds! First, prepare two sets of origami sheets cut into quarters, then cut them into shapes like the rounded part of a balloon and glue all the pieces together.

Attach a string there, and for the basket where people ride, thread a large bead underneath.

For the clouds, stack about 10 sheets of white tissue or flower paper, accordion-fold them, spread them out, and shape them into clouds.

After that, just combine the clouds and the balloons you made and you’re done! It’s also recommended to make the balloons with origami in various colors and patterns!

Let’s celebrate the children’s new beginning with this setup that creates a sky filled with hot-air balloons! First, cut multiple pieces of construction paper into identical, perfectly symmetrical balloon shapes.

Fold each cut piece vertically in half, then glue six pieces together to give the balloon a three-dimensional look.

You can use the same color for all the pieces, or alternate patterns and colors—both are fine! You can also draw pictures inside.

Attach thread to the finished balloon, then fasten it to two wooden sticks arranged in a cross to complete it! It’s also recommended to make clouds and round ornaments in the same way as the balloons and hang them together.

Balloon made with colored ribbons

Balloon made with colored ribbons

Balloon wall decorations made with colored ribbons will beautifully brighten up the venue for the graduation ceremony.

Be sure to try making them with the children.

Teachers should prepare by drawing a circle on construction paper, adding a slight taper from the circle to create a balloon template, and then using it to cut out colored paper.

On the colored paper, use a craft knife to make vertical slits about 1.5 cm apart starting from the center.

From here, have the children choose their favorite ribbons and weave them through the slits, alternating over and under.

When they finish, secure the ends with tape.

Finally, decorate the basket area with self-portraits or photos, connect it to the balloon, and it’s complete! It’s so colorful and cute.
