Songs by male artists known for their captivating deep voices. Classic Japanese hits and recommended popular tracks.

These days, male vocalists with high tones are especially popular, and it feels like we hear fewer songs sung with deep, rugged low voices.

Still, that resonant low register that echoes to the core is something many men aspire to, and I suspect plenty of women also find themselves saying, “I get chills from a smoky, masculine singing voice!”

When a male artist known for his striking low notes sings from a woman’s perspective, it can actually highlight feminine allure and sound even more captivating.

This time, we’ve gathered classic tracks by male artists whose irresistibly rich low vocals steal the show.

Go ahead and lose yourself in these stylish, moody low voices.

POISON ~In a world like this where you can’t even say what you want~Sorimachi Takashi

A song well known as the theme for the popular drama GTO, in which Sorimachi himself starred.

He delivers its rather challenging, low-register-focused melody with a voice that never gets buried—no surprise for an actor who’s used to speaking lines.

Typically, in upbeat rock like this—especially these days—the melodies tend to center on high tones, but the songwriting here makes superb use of Takashi Sorimachi’s voice, which is a perfect fit.

astronomical observationBUMP OF CHICKEN

It was BUMP OF CHICKEN’s third single, released in March 2001, and it was used as an insert song in “Tentai Kansoku” (Stargazing).

The uptempo sense of momentum feels really pleasant! The way Masatoshi Fujwara delivers the vocals—A and B verses centered on the mid to low range contrasted with a chorus focused on the high register—is really well done and brings out the song’s appeal.

A New JourneyYONA YONA WEEKENDERS

A gem from YONA YONA WEEKENDERS, marked by a warm low end and irresistible groove that capture the moody nightlife atmosphere of Shibuya.

From Isono-kun’s husky vocals, you can feel both the courage and kindness needed to set out on life’s journey.

Now in their fourth year since their major debut, this new work brims with fresh challenges.

It’s a song I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone about to take a step forward, or to those who want to create special memories with someone dear.

I’d rather die.Fuji Kaze

Fujii Kaze – Shinunoga E-Wa (Not a MV)
I'd rather die.Fuji Kaze

A track included on Fujii Kaze’s debut album HELP EVER HURT NEVER, released in May 2020.

It’s a very languid, slow-tempo song, and what further accentuates that languor is Fujii’s singing with a rich low register.

It’s not a stereotypical “sexy deep voice,” but the way he employs his lower tones within the song is exceptionally well done.

The contrast with the part in the latter half where the vocals jump up an octave also seems to add depth to the song’s atmosphere.

Terminalnatori

Singer-songwriter Natori, known for his downer style and popular among younger audiences, has been active lately in providing songs for others as well.

Among his tracks, the one I especially recommend for men with lower voices is Terminal.

This piece also showcases Natori’s signature melancholic vibe in full force.

While it’s not extremely low, it sits mostly in the low to low-mid range, so if you mix in breathiness and sing with rich overtones, it will really bring out the appeal of a low male voice.

Kaikai KitanEVE

Marked by its heavy sound and exhilarating, fast-paced melody, Eve’s work is an ambitious piece that portrays the emptiness within and the struggle with oneself, while singing of the strength to overcome the darkness.

The delicate yet swift vocals and meticulously constructed lyrical world harmonize beautifully, gripping listeners’ hearts and never letting go.

Released in October 2020, it garnered widespread attention both in Japan and abroad when it was chosen as the opening theme for Season 1 of the anime Jujutsu Kaisen.

Its deeply meaningful lyrics and memorable melodic lines are sure to be a reliable companion when you want to face yourself or take a new step forward.

Nothing I do goes well.meiyo

Nothing I do goes well.meiyo

A debut work by meiyo, whose rich, deep voice resonates with the heart.

It’s more than just a song that caught fire on social media—it’s a masterpiece that brilliantly captures the feelings of today’s youth.

With a sharp eye, it portrays the true emotions of modern people who put on a brave face while being tormented by inferiority, and their struggle with self-loathing.

When you want to reassess how easily you’re swayed by others’ opinions, or when you hope to soothe those grappling with similar worries, its subtly nostalgic sound will gently stay by your side.
