Songs by male artists known for their captivating deep voices. Classic Japanese hits and recommended popular tracks.

These days, male vocalists with high tones are especially popular, and it feels like we hear fewer songs sung with deep, rugged low voices.

Still, that resonant low register that echoes to the core is something many men aspire to, and I suspect plenty of women also find themselves saying, “I get chills from a smoky, masculine singing voice!”

When a male artist known for his striking low notes sings from a woman’s perspective, it can actually highlight feminine allure and sound even more captivating.

This time, we’ve gathered classic tracks by male artists whose irresistibly rich low vocals steal the show.

Go ahead and lose yourself in these stylish, moody low voices.

Space Battleship Yamatosasaki isao

Space Battleship Yamato (1) / Isao Sasaki + The Royal Knights
Space Battleship Yamatosasaki isao

The theme song of the popular Showa-era anime Space Battleship Yamato is sung by Isao Sasaki.

Both the anime itself and its theme are such classics that they hardly need any introduction anymore.

Sasaki’s resonant low vocals, combined with a thick, full-bodied male chorus, lend the piece a quasi-military color that heightens Yamato’s heroic atmosphere.

However, the kind of taut, powerful low notes you hear in this song are actually quite hard to produce when you try singing it yourself, which really showcases Sasaki’s exceptional vocal ability.

This is Fujii Kaze’s 10th digital single, released on March 20, 2022.

I’m embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t listened much to songs where he sings like this, but his voice has a somewhat subdued, heart-piercing low register as its foundation, while also carrying a gentle quality that includes bright higher overtones—giving it a uniquely captivating charm.

Personally, I found the whispered low tones in the A section especially wonderful.

A Little Love SongMONGOL800

A signature song by MONGOL800, released in September 2001.

It has never been released as a single, yet it’s been covered by various artists and has firmly become one of their defining tracks, which is interesting.

Now, about the “low voice” you hear in this song: I think it’s closely tied to the band’s overall direction, but rather than a trained, resonant low register, the vocals from the very beginning are delivered in a sort of low, almost throwaway, murmuring style.

From the standpoint of “vocal polish,” this isn’t necessarily an approach you’d praise.

However, taken within the context of the whole track—where the chorus flips into a bright, pop-forward development with a belted high range—I think the singer’s individuality is produced very effectively.

It’s probably also one of the reasons this song is so popular: it’s full of charms that are anything but by-the-book.

O flowers now in full bloom,Kobukuro

Kobukuro – Oh flowers now in full bloom
O flowers now in full bloom,Kobukuro

Kobukuro’s 24th single, released in February 2014.

Kobukuro isn’t a unit that particularly emphasizes low-register vocals, and in fact the song itself isn’t arranged to highlight low vocals either.

The track I’m introducing here is, admittedly, easy to sing at karaoke even for those who struggle with high notes, but it doesn’t feature especially distinctive low parts.

That said, their lower range has remarkable firmness and depth, and it’s clear that delivering it steadily requires considerable training.

Properly resonating low notes and extending one’s range downward is in many ways more difficult than hitting high tones, and this song lets you feel their prowess as singers.

Fujii Kaze’s track “Michite Yuku.” These days, male artists who can deliver a deep low register have become extremely rare, but Fujii Kaze is one of the few who can truly command that range.

In this song, you can savor his low voice throughout.

While it draws on R&B at its core, the track maintains a consistently gentle tone that creates a chill vibe.

That atmosphere further enhances the comfort of his low vocals, so definitely give it a listen.

Goodbye to sorrowanzenchitai

A love ballad by Anzenchitai that captivates with its rich, deep bass tones and emotional vocals.

Centered on parting and renewal, it gently sings of the bittersweetness of love and the hope that follows.

Koji Tamaki’s profound voice resonates to the depths of the heart, conveying both compassion for the other person and the strength to stay by their side.

Released in June 1985, it topped the Oricon charts, marked the band’s first appearance at the 36th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen, and won the Gold Award at the 27th Japan Record Awards.

It’s a song that quietly gives you a push when you’ve gone through a farewell with someone important and are ready to take a new step forward.

Speechless… Summer (Speechless… Summer JAYWALK ORIGINAL EDITION 1 Al Version)THE JAYWALK

This is THE JAYWALK’s (then J-WALK) 18th single, released in July 1991.

With sales approaching a million, it’s one of JAYWALK’s signature songs.

It’s a comfortable mid-tempo pop song; the vocals aren’t particularly high, and the melody and singing make effective use of the mid-to-high range.

That may reflect the early ’90s trend of crafting songs with a strong awareness of the karaoke market, where many people would sing them.

That said, the deft use of a soft mixed voice (middle voice) showcases the ease and confidence of a veteran act—by the time this song came out, they were celebrating their 10th anniversary since debut.
