Songs by male artists known for their captivating deep voices. Classic Japanese hits and recommended popular tracks.
These days, male vocalists with high tones are especially popular, and it feels like we hear fewer songs sung with deep, rugged low voices.
Still, that resonant low register that echoes to the core is something many men aspire to, and I suspect plenty of women also find themselves saying, “I get chills from a smoky, masculine singing voice!”
When a male artist known for his striking low notes sings from a woman’s perspective, it can actually highlight feminine allure and sound even more captivating.
This time, we’ve gathered classic tracks by male artists whose irresistibly rich low vocals steal the show.
Go ahead and lose yourself in these stylish, moody low voices.

Goodbye to sorrowanzenchitai

A love ballad by Anzenchitai that captivates with its rich, deep bass tones and emotional vocals.
Centered on parting and renewal, it gently sings of the bittersweetness of love and the hope that follows.
Koji Tamaki’s profound voice resonates to the depths of the heart, conveying both compassion for the other person and the strength to stay by their side.
Released in June 1985, it topped the Oricon charts, marked the band’s first appearance at the 36th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen, and won the Gold Award at the 27th Japan Record Awards.
It’s a song that quietly gives you a push when you’ve gone through a farewell with someone important and are ready to take a new step forward.
umbrellaSEKAI NO OWARI

This is SEKAI NO OWARI’s 13th major-label single, released in June 2020.
Throughout the song, the vocal melody is centered in the low to mid range, and along with its gentle arrangement, it creates a very moody atmosphere.
The vocals carry a somewhat androgynous impression—not the kind of voice typically associated with the phrase “deep voice”—but the calm, mellow quality that runs through the entire track resonates very pleasantly, making it highly appealing.
The contrast between the androgynous timbre and the low-centered melody seems to craft a unique sonic world.
It might be a song that works equally well whether sung by a man or a woman, such as at karaoke.
helm’N bass10-FEET

10-FEET, a band that’s been gaining more and more popularity lately, stands out among Japanese rock bands for incorporating reggae as an essential element.
Their highly original sound has earned them strong acclaim within the industry.
Among their tracks, the one I especially recommend is “helm’N bass.” The song opens with a reggae-style arrangement, letting you savor a deep, Deejay-like low-register vocal.
Be sure to check it out.
FOR YOUR LOVEMatsuzaki Shigeru

Shigeru Matsuzaki is the only Japanese artist to have won the authentic vocal competition “Mallorca Music Festival,” a title so hard to achieve that even top artists around the world struggle to win.
He’s not widely known in Japan, but his accomplishments are truly extraordinary.
A song of his I highly recommend is “FOR YOUR LOVE.” It’s crafted in a ’90s R&B ballad style, and you can enjoy some rare vocal ad-libs from Matsuzaki.
Of course, his deep low notes are also incredibly appealing, so be sure to check it out.
FlowerORANGE RANGE

Thanks to a recent revival hit, the mixture rock band ORANGE RANGE is now attracting attention from younger generations as well.
They’ve produced many hit numbers, but among them, the song I recommend for men with lower voices is Hana.
It might not sound particularly low at first, but its lowest note is low G, so there are quite a few deep phrases.
The highest note is mid F (F4), which means the overall range is fairly narrow, making it easier to sing for men with lower voices.

O flowers now in full bloom,Kobukuro

Kobukuro’s 24th single, released in February 2014.
Kobukuro isn’t a unit that particularly emphasizes low-register vocals, and in fact the song itself isn’t arranged to highlight low vocals either.
The track I’m introducing here is, admittedly, easy to sing at karaoke even for those who struggle with high notes, but it doesn’t feature especially distinctive low parts.
That said, their lower range has remarkable firmness and depth, and it’s clear that delivering it steadily requires considerable training.
Properly resonating low notes and extending one’s range downward is in many ways more difficult than hitting high tones, and this song lets you feel their prowess as singers.
TRUE LOVEFujii Fumiya

This was Fumiya Fujii’s second single and his first release after The Checkers disbanded.
It came out in November 1993.
It was also the first song he composed himself.
Perhaps because of that, the melody is crafted to make the most of Fujii’s rich, low, sweet voice, resulting in a track that lets you fully enjoy his vocals and singing.
Amid that low register, the contrast with the falsetto touches and the high, belted notes in the chorus and other parts is exquisite as well.
