Songs by male artists known for their captivating deep voices. Classic Japanese hits and recommended popular tracks.

These days, male vocalists with high tones are especially popular, and it feels like we hear fewer songs sung with deep, rugged low voices.

Still, that resonant low register that echoes to the core is something many men aspire to, and I suspect plenty of women also find themselves saying, “I get chills from a smoky, masculine singing voice!”

When a male artist known for his striking low notes sings from a woman’s perspective, it can actually highlight feminine allure and sound even more captivating.

This time, we’ve gathered classic tracks by male artists whose irresistibly rich low vocals steal the show.

Go ahead and lose yourself in these stylish, moody low voices.

waxing; filling up; becoming full; growing (e.g., the moon growing fuller)Fuji Kaze

Fujii Kaze’s track “Michite Yuku.” These days, male artists who can deliver a deep low register have become extremely rare, but Fujii Kaze is one of the few who can truly command that range.

In this song, you can savor his low voice throughout.

While it draws on R&B at its core, the track maintains a consistently gentle tone that creates a chill vibe.

That atmosphere further enhances the comfort of his low vocals, so definitely give it a listen.

O flowers now in full bloom,Kobukuro

Kobukuro – Oh flowers now in full bloom
O flowers now in full bloom,Kobukuro

Kobukuro’s 24th single, released in February 2014.

Kobukuro isn’t a unit that particularly emphasizes low-register vocals, and in fact the song itself isn’t arranged to highlight low vocals either.

The track I’m introducing here is, admittedly, easy to sing at karaoke even for those who struggle with high notes, but it doesn’t feature especially distinctive low parts.

That said, their lower range has remarkable firmness and depth, and it’s clear that delivering it steadily requires considerable training.

Properly resonating low notes and extending one’s range downward is in many ways more difficult than hitting high tones, and this song lets you feel their prowess as singers.

A Little Love SongMONGOL800

A signature song by MONGOL800, released in September 2001.

It has never been released as a single, yet it’s been covered by various artists and has firmly become one of their defining tracks, which is interesting.

Now, about the “low voice” you hear in this song: I think it’s closely tied to the band’s overall direction, but rather than a trained, resonant low register, the vocals from the very beginning are delivered in a sort of low, almost throwaway, murmuring style.

From the standpoint of “vocal polish,” this isn’t necessarily an approach you’d praise.

However, taken within the context of the whole track—where the chorus flips into a bright, pop-forward development with a belted high range—I think the singer’s individuality is produced very effectively.

It’s probably also one of the reasons this song is so popular: it’s full of charms that are anything but by-the-book.

This is Fujii Kaze’s 10th digital single, released on March 20, 2022.

I’m embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t listened much to songs where he sings like this, but his voice has a somewhat subdued, heart-piercing low register as its foundation, while also carrying a gentle quality that includes bright higher overtones—giving it a uniquely captivating charm.

Personally, I found the whispered low tones in the A section especially wonderful.

This is SEKAI NO OWARI’s 13th major-label single, released in June 2020.

Throughout the song, the vocal melody is centered in the low to mid range, and along with its gentle arrangement, it creates a very moody atmosphere.

The vocals carry a somewhat androgynous impression—not the kind of voice typically associated with the phrase “deep voice”—but the calm, mellow quality that runs through the entire track resonates very pleasantly, making it highly appealing.

The contrast between the androgynous timbre and the low-centered melody seems to craft a unique sonic world.

It might be a song that works equally well whether sung by a man or a woman, such as at karaoke.

FlareBUMP OF CHICKEN

This is BUMP OF CHICKEN’s 15th single, released digitally in February 2021.

At first listen, some people might perceive vocalist Motoo Fujiwara’s voice as slightly high-pitched, but it actually contains a very wide range of frequencies.

The depth of his vocals in the lower-register passages is remarkable, and the contrast with the high notes in the chorus enhances the song’s appeal.

Combined with its slightly wistful, ballad-like tone, the track showcases the full charm of his singing.

FOR YOUR LOVEMatsuzaki Shigeru

Shigeru Matsuzaki is the only Japanese artist to have won the authentic vocal competition “Mallorca Music Festival,” a title so hard to achieve that even top artists around the world struggle to win.

He’s not widely known in Japan, but his accomplishments are truly extraordinary.

A song of his I highly recommend is “FOR YOUR LOVE.” It’s crafted in a ’90s R&B ballad style, and you can enjoy some rare vocal ad-libs from Matsuzaki.

Of course, his deep low notes are also incredibly appealing, so be sure to check it out.
