Making plum syrup

Here’s how to make a delicious, seasonally inspired plum juice.
Prepare green or fully ripe plums, rock sugar, and a large container.
The key is to choose unblemished plums and prepare them carefully.
Sterilize the large storage container and let it dry before use.
Layer the plums and rock sugar like a mille-feuille.
Make sure you have enough space so you can work comfortably without straining.
It’s also a good idea to explain the purpose and benefits of plum juice as you go.
Enjoy making your tasty plum juice!
Ping-pong ball catch

May and June, when temperatures gradually rise and it feels good to get moving, are the perfect season for exercise.
Prepare some fun activities and gently loosen up bodies that got sluggish over the winter! This time, we’re introducing “Ping-Pong Ball Catch.” Attach strips of duct tape in a grid pattern across a hula hoop, then have someone hold it with the sticky side facing up.
From a distance, throw ping-pong balls and have them catch the balls on the taped area.
Adjust the size of the hoop according to participants’ abilities so everyone can enjoy it.
It also serves as upper-limb training while you play, making it a great recommendation for recreational activities in senior care facilities.
Chair exercises in May

In May the temperature becomes pleasant and there are more days you can spend comfortably.
Chair exercises for May, which you can do while seated, are perfect for this comfortable season.
It’s a good time to move your body, but we recommend easy, seated exercises that suit each senior’s physical condition.
Because the movements involve slowly moving the hands and feet to the music of children’s songs, they’re enjoyable to do.
Also, recalling and singing the lyrics stimulates the brain, making it a sure way to help prevent dementia.
Be mindful to incorporate diaphragmatic breathing as well.
Recommended Exercises for May

Many senior and welfare facilities probably do daily exercises, don’t they? Here are some exercises perfect for May events and recreational activities.
Have the seniors share things that evoke May, and do exercises while singing May-related songs like “Koinobori.” You can incorporate these not only into special events and recreation, but also into your regular exercise routines.
By doing movements inspired by May, some seniors may feel a sense of the season.
It might even spark lively conversations about their memories of May.
Carnation bouquet

Mother’s Day is in May, isn’t it? Some senior homes and welfare facilities may also hold Mother’s Day events.
When it comes to Mother’s Day gifts, carnations are the classic choice.
Here, we’ll introduce an origami bouquet featuring carnations.
Fold origami paper and use scissors to cut and shape the carnations.
Make the stems and leaves as well, then attach the carnation flowers.
Create several carnations, place them in an origami bouquet sleeve, and you’re done.
The finished bouquets can be presented by staff to senior residents as Mother’s Day gifts.
Of course, this also makes a great craft project for May.

Spring Vegetable Quiz

Speaking of spring, everything starts anew, so it’s really exciting, isn’t it? And spring vegetables are a must for this season! Many people may not actually know much about spring vegetables, so this time I’ll introduce them in a quiz format.
What comes to mind when you think of spring vegetables? Vegetables that are in season in spring have plenty of nutrients because they grow after enduring the winter cold.
By eating spring vegetables, your body can absorb nutrients well and you can stay healthy.
Spring also brings temperature swings that can throw your autonomic nervous system off balance.
At times like that, it helps to know the names of spring vegetables and use them in your cooking!
Brain-training Exercise Song: Chatsumi (Tea Picking)

The balmy month of May is a time when it’s easier for older adults to get moving.
This time, we’re introducing a brain-training exercise with singing that’s perfect for the season.
May is also the season of fresh green tea.
“Chatsumi” (Tea Picking) is a children’s song that symbolizes early summer in Japan, known for its bright, rhythmic melody.
It’s easy to learn, making it suitable for older adults to exercise to.
We’ve incorporated traditional Japanese tea-picking movements into the routine, so it’s easy to enjoy casually.
Singing together as a group also creates a sense of unity and makes for a delightful time.
