Music Festivals in May [2026]: Outdoor Festivals and Events Summary

Nanyo Wine Fest is a rare street-style wine event even for the Tohoku region. Set in the Akayu Onsen district of Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture, the streets of the hot spring town are closed to traffic and opened up entirely as a festival venue, bringing together six wineries from within the city. In addition to wine tastings and interactions with the makers, the event features DJ-led music and food booths serving dishes that pair well with wine. In 2026, it will be held on May 23 on the prefectural road and parking lot in front of Ekubo Plaza.

STAR ISLAND is a next-generation fireworks entertainment project launched by Avex in 2017 to pass on Japan’s traditional fireworks culture to future generations. It has staged performances around the world, including in Singapore and Saudi Arabia, drawing a cumulative audience of over 15 million people. At the Odaiba Seaside Park venue, 12,000 fireworks, 800 drones, lasers, and a live ensemble are synchronized to a 90-minute script, transforming Tokyo Bay into a massive stage. An admission-free outdoor festival in Kanizaka Park, Fussa, Tokyo, that has continued since the 1970s, championing freedom and a DIY spirit. Within the venue, a unique local currency called “Kani Tickets” is used, bringing the community and music together.
