[Nursing Home] Recommended for Sports Day! Lively Recreational Activities

The sports day is the big annual event at the nursing home, isn’t it?

Many residents look forward to it.

This time, we’re introducing recreational activities that adapt classic sports day ideas for older adults.

They’re recommended because they help stimulate both the body and the brain.

With safety in mind, many of the activities can be done while seated, so everyone can take part with confidence.

From exciting team competitions to activities that build a sense of unity among residents and staff, we hope you’ll host a fun sports day that brings everyone together.

Newspaper Tug-of-War

Newspaper Tug-of-War

A classic event that energizes sports days, tug-of-war gets a twist as Newspaper Tug-of-War.

Place a rectangle-cut sheet of newspaper at the feet of two seniors facing each other.

The rule is simple: within the time limit, whoever pulls the newspaper closer to themselves wins.

If there’s no clear winner, decide based on which side of the center line drawn on the paper it ends up closer to.

The highlight of this game is that many people can play at the same time.

It recreates the heart-pounding excitement of the tug-of-war you did at school as a child.

Why not try this event, where the feeling of “I don’t want to lose!” makes the competition even more thrilling?

baton relay

[Senior Brain Training Exercises] Stick Relay Recreation [Care Prevention]
baton relay

This is a seated game themed around relays, which are strongly associated with school sports days.

Each team sits in a single file, and the person at the front holds a baton.

At the starting signal, they pass the baton back to the person behind them; once it reaches the last person, it is passed forward again using the opposite hand.

The team that completes the set number of passes first wins.

Having the opposing team seated alongside may help players stay focused on the competition.

By clearly specifying how to move the body when passing the baton, you can also target specific areas like the shoulders and arms for precise movement.

Paper cup scooping

Simple yet exciting paper! Cup-and-stick scooping
Paper cup scooping

It’s a game where you scoop up paper cups arranged on a table using a stick.

Because the motion involves scooping and lifting, it requires specific ways of moving the stick and applying force, which helps develop fine finger movements and concentration.

Disposable chopsticks are easy to use because they have a good balance of weight and length, but it could also be fun to adjust the difficulty by preparing tools with different weights and lengths, such as straws.

If you sit facing each other at the table and play in a competitive format where you aim to collect more paper cups than your opponent, it should get exciting and can also be expected to improve your reaction speed.

A bingo game that uses both the head and the body to have fun

A bingo game that uses both the head and the body to have fun

This is a game where you toss beanbags into targets arranged in a grid, aiming to line up a row.

By adjusting the number and size of the squares and the distance to the targets, you can tailor the rules to the participants and make it exciting.

The key is how you throw the beanbags so they reach the targets; it helps build concentration for gauging distances to far objects and for adjusting throwing strength.

Assess your own abilities carefully and decide which targets you’re more likely to reach.

Balloon Volleyball Relay

Balloon Volleyball Relay

It’s a game where you gently tap the balloon upward to pass it to the next person, linking passes all the way to the goal basket.

Passing sideways can be difficult, so it may be easier to place a helper in front and have players tap the balloon toward them.

If you chase balloons that fly off to the side, it might put strain on the body, so it’s also a good idea to attach a string to the balloon so you can easily bring it back into view.

Encourage players to focus on gauging the right amount of force to connect to the next person and on judging how to capture the balloon in each situation.

Balloon release

Fly away, balloons! (Day-service recreation)
Balloon release

This is a game where you throw beanbags at balloons lined up inside a frame, aiming to knock the balloons out of the frame.

Although simple, it’s fun because there’s a lot to think about—like how much force to use when throwing the beanbag and where to aim to knock out the most balloons.

Since you throw the beanbags over a distance, it helps build concentration, and the quick bursts of force give your wrists a workout too.

If you compete by throwing a set number of beanbags to see how many balloons you can knock out, it’s sure to get exciting and heated.

Borrowed Item Race

Borrowed Item Race

The borrowing race is a classic event beloved at sports days.

It’s also a great activity for sports days where older adults take the lead, letting everyone have fun together.

First, participants race toward a box filled with slips of paper.

If walking is difficult, adjust by using a wheelchair or shortening the distance.

Next, once they find the person or item written on the paper and reach the finish line together, the race ends.

In addition to individual races, team events that make use of teamwork among older participants are also a good option.

Why not try this event that’s sure to fire up the crowd’s cheers?
