[For Seniors] Recreation Games Related to October Events

October is when the heat finally eases and autumn truly sets in.

The weather is getting cooler, and there are probably more days that feel comfortable.

Autumn is full of exciting events like Halloween and sports festivals.

This time, we’ll introduce recreation ideas related to October’s events.

Since some seniors may find it difficult to go out, we’ve focused on activities that can be enjoyed indoors.

Please use these as a reference and have a wonderful time together!

Little Red Riding Hood

A belated solo Halloween… the tale of me dressing up as Little Red Riding Hood
Little Red Riding Hood

This is a Little Red Riding Hood costume, isn’t it? When most people hear “Little Red Riding Hood,” they probably think of the Brothers Grimm tale.

The girl in the story wears a red hood, right? It’s a popular Halloween costume among girls and women who like cute styles, but why not have older adults join in too and relive their childhood by dressing up? Just drape a large red cloth over your head and carry a basket with flowers, and you’ve got a fine Little Red Riding Hood costume.

It’s easy and I highly recommend it!

Demon Slayer: Tanjiro

[Demon Slayer] Huntress - Ancient Capital Cosplay vol.2 [Cosplay Performance]
Demon Slayer: Tanjiro

How about cosplaying as Tanjiro Kamado, the protagonist of the hugely popular manga and anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba that became a social phenomenon? Tanjiro’s trademark is his green-and-black checkered haori.

You can make it yourself, but since the series is so popular, there are plenty of adult-sized costumes available for purchase.

Under the haori, he wears the Demon Slayer Corps uniform, but if you don’t have anything similar, a black turtleneck and pants will do the trick! Then tuck a toy katana from a 100-yen shop into your belt.

If you’re planning to meet kids on Halloween, they’ll be thrilled and shout, “It’s Tanjiro!”

Acorn spinning top making

Handmade toy: a spinning top made with acorns — an easy craft to try with kids
Acorn spinning top making

Use an awl to make a hole at the base of the acorn.

When you do this, be sure to drill a straight hole right at the center point so it will serve as the axle when the acorn spins like a top.

After making the hole, insert a toothpick into it.

Push it in firmly, then cut it to a suitable length.

Thicker acorns become easy for anyone to spin well.

Long, thin acorns will start to spin if you focus on making the top rotate quickly.

Making a cosmos flower wreath

When you think of quintessential autumn flowers, cosmos likely come to mind.

They bloom in a variety of colors—white, yellow, pink, and red—and the way they sway in the breeze gives them an indescribably cute charm.

Let’s make cosmos out of origami and create a cosmos wreath! The process of making the cosmos involves some delicate, detailed steps, but let’s take it slow and work carefully.

Folding origami and using scissors engage your fine motor skills, which also helps stimulate the brain, and the wreath is something you can display once it’s finished—that’s a nice bonus, isn’t it?

Halloween Dracula

A classic Halloween costume: Dracula! Dracula outfits are popular with everyone from kids to adults, and there are many different types sold in stores.

The must-have items for a Dracula costume are a black cape with a red lining and a white shirt.

A shirt with decoration around the collar looks even more Dracula-like.

If possible, prepare fangs as well.

You’ll need to make or buy the cape, but a shirt you already own is fine.

For a makeup touch, make your face pale to add an extra eerie effect!
