This is a performance of Hanagasa Ondo, Ringo Bushi, and Soran Bushi by Tsugaru-shamisen player Daisuke Sugiyama.

Born in Aichi Prefecture, Daisuke Sugiyama won the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award at the 8th National Tsugaru Shamisen Competition in Kobe in 2011.

Aiming to showcase the excellence of Japan’s traditional performing arts, he performs on stages across the country.

This is footage from the Fall Festival held at Arizona State University.

Members of the Japanese Student Association at ASU are performing the Hokkaido folk song Soran Bushi.

It’s wonderful that they have the opportunity to present it overseas.

Watching it, I can’t help but feel happy hearing the audience’s applause.

This is a video from “Hisakazu Noguchi The Big Band with BREEZE,” held at the Kawasaki City Art Center on June 8, 2012.

The performance is by the members of “Shinyuri Jazz Square.” The playing is excellent, and even with Japanese lyrics, the singing is jazzy and incredibly cool.

Hachimitsu’s pet dog is being made to dance the Soran Bushi.

It looks a bit confused, but without running away or resisting (though it might not be thrilled…), the way it lets its owner do as they please is so cute it makes you laugh.

Some people comment that it’s a little pitiful, though.

The Peanuts, Soran Bushi (Bonus Track)Za • Pīnattsu

The Peanuts was a duo of twin sisters Emi Ito and Yumi Ito, active from February 11, 1959, to April 5, 1975.

They were also active as actors.

In addition to the folk song Soran Bushi, they sang others such as Yagi-bushi, Saitaro-bushi, and Itsuki no Komoriuta.

The elderly folks who attend the day-service center are doing exercises to the tune of Kiyoshi Hikawa’s Soran Bushi.

It’s a combination of a popular enka singer’s vocals and the well-known song “Soran Bushi,” so everyone is energetically taking part in the exercises.

We’re performing the Hokkaido folk song “Soran Bushi” with brass instruments and percussion.

The sheet music is from Music Eight, which every wind ensemble player knows.

Since the opening is layered and builds up, it actually takes solid technique to put together well—even with Music Eight’s arrangement.
