A song by X Japan, a five-piece rock band Japan proudly presents to the world.

It opens with strings that use the chorus melody, then moves into a gentle progression of guitar arpeggios and vocals only, which makes the intense band sound that follows stand out even more.

Despite its unconventional structure—featuring a guitar solo before the chorus—the relentless intensity and beautiful twin-lead guitar melodies heighten the anticipation for the chorus.

A high-level fusion of metal and classical, the piece was written and composed by YOSHIKI and is known as one of the signature tracks from the 1989 release BLUE BLOOD.

FANATIC◇CRISIS created “Phoenix 2022” to commemorate their 30th anniversary, and it was also used as the ending theme for the Nippon TV show Guruguru Ninety-Nine.

It’s a remake of their 1998 track, featuring a powerful melody, meticulous arrangement, and the distinctive lyrical world of Tsutomu Ishizuki.

This work stands as an emblematic song that fuses the band’s history with the present.

Their sound, blending rock and visual kei elements, conveys a stance of continually seeking new expression while carrying the emotions of the past into the modern era.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in exploring the history of visual kei.

This is a song by X JAPAN’s now-deceased guitarist that boasts extremely high name recognition and popularity.

On the Oricon charts, it reached number one for the week and ranked number one for the year.

Even now, it’s still frequently played on the radio, and it made me feel that it’s a song with enduring, unwavering popularity.

DIR EN GREY is a band whose high-level performance and musicality have earned them tremendous acclaim worldwide.

They’ve held concerts even in Finland, a sacred ground of rock, and they’re beloved by rock enthusiasts across many countries, transcending the visual-kei label.

Among their songs, Vinushka is especially renowned as a masterpiece.

Centered on the theme of “sin,” it builds from a quiet opening, and the death growl after the chorus is nothing short of overwhelming.

This is an authentic rock sound that represents Japan.

Swaying…Laputa

Laputa, who produced numerous masterpieces—among them the song Yurenagara…—is truly a masterpiece among masterpieces.

Although Laputa is categorized within the visual kei scene as part of the Nagoya-kei style, their sound and visuals are saturated with the distinctive traits of that subgenre.

With its eerie yet intense melodies, this track will captivate you from the very first listen.

Masterpieces of visual kei: staple, popular V-kei rock songs (21–30)

Rhapsody of the Autumn WindRaphael

Formed in the mid-teen years back in 1997, Raphael gained popularity even during their indie days and made their major debut in 1999.

However, their leader and guitarist, Kazuki, passed away suddenly in an unforeseen accident.

The band ended its activities before any of the members turned 20.

Despite their extremely short career, many bands respect them, and the songs they left behind are highly regarded.

The song introduced here, “Aki Kaze no Rhapsody” (Autumn Wind Rhapsody), is a representative track from their later period—an evocative masterpiece where YUKI’s classically trained vocals blend beautifully with guitar tones inspired by Irish music.

With each release their performance skills improved, and it’s clear that the talent of Kazuki, the main composer, was just about to take flight—making the loss all the more heartbreaking.
