Here’s an introduction to some of the classic and popular songs by WANIMA, a three-piece rock band from Kumamoto that helped reignite the melodic hardcore (melodic punk) boom in the 2010s!

They’re a new-generation melodic hardcore band carrying on the wave from Hi-STANDARD, MONGOL800, and 10-FEET.

In addition to their musical strengths—catchy tracks that skillfully weave in reggae and ska elements, tight musicianship, and impressive vocal harmonies—their boundlessly cheerful personalities are also a huge part of their appeal.

By the way, it’s well known that “1106” is a song dedicated to bassist-vocalist KENTA’s grandfather, who was a fisherman.

KENTA himself is also said to be quite skilled at fishing, often dropping a line with whatever gear he has on hand during breaks between tours.

BROTHERWANIMA

The rock sound is energetic, but I don’t feel WANIMA’s usual brightness that lifts up everyone around them.

It’s a song that seems to cut out the negative side of this world.

But maybe that itself is WANIMA’s way of cheering us on.

It’s about a minute long and ends before you know it, but in a way, that makes you think about a lot of things.

Baby SniperWANIMA

When you think of WANIMA, you might picture lots of energetic songs with intense rock sounds, but “Baby Sniper” has a unique, mysterious atmosphere.

The lyrics are filled with enigmatic phrases.

Even so, KENTA’s vocals make you suddenly realize, “This is WANIMA.” It’s a song that steps a little away from their usual style to show a new side of them as artists.

ShalalaWANIMA

WANIMA’s party song “Sharara” is one everyone can get hyped up with.

The chorus has an easy-to-follow melody, so after hearing it once, you’ll be able to sing along with everyone while clapping your hands.

Surprisingly, the lyrics carry a touch of melancholy.

JOY offers the heavy, fast beats and sound characteristic of a melodic hardcore band.

While it’s a coupling track, it still delivers the kind of message song that’s unmistakably WANIMA.

Precisely because the arrangement is a simple melodic hardcore style, the power of the words stands out front and center—wouldn’t you say that’s the essence of this track?
