[Western Music] Both Speed and Bittersweet Feels! Recommended Melodic Hardcore/Punk Bands [2026]

In the 2020s, what kind of image comes to mind when you hear the music genre “melocore”? Chances are, the bands and sounds you think of vary depending on your generation.

The heyday of melocore in the ’90s, the early 2000s boom of pop punk and youth punk, the mid-2010s onward pop-punk revival—each band has had its own sound.

In this piece, we focus on melocore—short for melodic hardcore—which has become established in Japan as the abbreviation for melodic hardcore, just as the name suggests.

We’ll also look at related styles like pop punk, selecting both veteran acts and rising younger bands drawing attention in the 2020s.

Hailing from South Carolina in the United States, they originally gained popularity with a metallic, passionate hardcore sound, but radically changed their style with their fourth album, RARE, released in 2017.

Their sound, heavily influenced by bands considered shoegaze from the 1990s, belongs to an entirely different genre.

If you want to hear them as punk or hardcore, pick up their early albums.

The DisconnectCounterparts

“The Disconnect,” released in 2011 by Counterparts, a melodic hardcore band from Ontario, Canada, is a track that lays bare the inner human psyche—venting impatience with repetitive daily life and bouts of self-loathing.

The drummer drives the band forward with creative beats and fills, and as if responding to his performance, the bass, guitars, and vocals fill out the band’s sound.

It’s a song that strikes an excellent balance between technique and emotion.

Since their remarkable debut in 2002, they have released numerous standout records on Bridge Nine Records.

Through touring around the world, they’ve maintained a staggering work rate, sometimes performing more than 250 shows a year.

Their fourth album, Unfinished Business—produced by Zeuss—showcased a heavyweight sound that fuses hardcore, punk, and metal, epitomizing the essence of traditional hardcore.

In 2023, they were nominated at the Boston Music Awards, reflecting their rising acclaim.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to be moved by impassioned live performances and a tough, hard-hitting sound.

“Never In The Cards.” by the post-hardcore band Dependence.

From the very first arpeggiated intro, it’s a tearjerker—the emotion hits you all at once, making it a dangerously evocative track.

Rather than relying on sheer speed, it has the feel of hardcore that compels you with a solid, weighty beat.

The vocalist’s expressiveness is outstanding, and the contrast between the shouts and the beautiful melodic parts is stunning.

This kind of melodic hardcore number is just the best.

Come With MeDeviates

Included on the 2004 album “Time Is the Distance.” A four-piece formed in Belgium in ’94.

They first reached Japan after signing with Epitaph, and this track is outstanding—its melodic hardcore has the driving speed and heft reminiscent of Pennywise.

Highly recommended listening.
