Here are some origami ideas for five-year-olds.

By the time children are five, you’ll often see them helping each other with parts they don’t understand or folding while looking at an origami instruction book.

While respecting each child’s pace, teachers should also enjoy working on these together with the children.

We’re introducing lots of ideas—ones you can fold and play with, as well as cute ones to decorate with or wear—so once the origami is finished, be sure to have fun playing with the children!

How about making a trick boat out of origami with children? First, fold the origami paper in half horizontally to make a rectangle and crease it.

Open it, then fold the top and bottom edges toward the center crease.

Unfold everything, then fold two diagonal triangles to create an X-shaped set of creases.

Open it again and fold all four corners toward the center.

Open once more, fold both side edges inward to meet the center crease, then open the lower section to form the shape of a boat.

Do the same with the upper section.

Fold the lower-right and upper-right tips outward.

Finally, flip it over and fold the upper-right corner down toward the lower-left, and it’s done.

It looks perfect for summer crafts or wall decorations.

Tulips are so appealing with their distinctive shape and the way their flowers bloom in a variety of colors.

Let’s make these delightful, just-to-look-at tulips using two sheets of origami paper.

We’ll fold a flower piece and a leaf piece, then combine them.

The key steps involve carefully folding along the creases as guides; for the flower piece, be sure to create the jagged edge at the top and the rounded shape at the bottom.

It’s fun to try not only color combinations inspired by real tulips, but also to experiment with your favorite origami colors to see how they change the look.

How about making a grasshopper that hops around in the grass out of origami? First, take a sheet of green origami paper and crease it vertically and horizontally to form a base similar to the start of a crane.

Fold back the tips on the left and right to make sharp triangles.

Fold the center point up to about one-third from the center, then fold the left and right corners and flip the paper over.

Next, fold the bottom section up three times, then fold the model in half horizontally.

Fold back the parts that will be the legs, and your grasshopper is complete.

A sword you can make from a single 15 cm square sheet of origami paper is perfect for a 5-year-old who loves pretend battles.

Next, bring the right and left corners to the center, and flip it over.

Fold both sides toward the center, fold the protruding corners toward the center as well, and repeat steps like folding up the bottom and folding it back.

For the finer folds near the end, it helps to mark them with a pen.

How to fold a star

Origami: Easy Star Made from a Single Sheet – Instructions
How to fold a star

Here’s how to fold a star that will come in handy in many situations.

First, with origami paper, fold once into a rectangle and twice into a triangle to create crease lines.

Open the paper, then fold the bottom-right corner toward the center, and fold that same corner down toward the bottom edge.

Next, fold the lower left corner of the square toward the tip of the triangle you just folded down.

Open everything, then fold the paper into a square by folding it in half horizontally and vertically.

Open the square and collapse it into a triangle.

Fold the right corner of the triangle downward.

Flip to the back and repeat the same step.

While holding it, pull the left edge; when the previous right corner lays flat to the left, press and crease it.

Finally, fold in the right tip, use the first crease as a guide to fold it back upward, and fold the left tip back from the inside to the outside.

Your star is complete.
