Suntory CRAFT BOSS Unsweetened Italiano “Alien Jones: Pizza Shop (Animation)” Edition

AmarcordNino Rota, Carlo Savina

The Craft Boss “Alien Jones” series featuring Tommy Lee Jones is always popular for its amusing storylines.

This new commercial is different from the previous ones in that it’s animated.

In a humorous touch, the narration explains that it became animated because they couldn’t film on location in Italy.

The plot about Alien Jones, who can’t stand anything that’s crooked, is especially entertaining—be sure to check it out.

Halloween NightAKB48

Halloween NightAKB48

AKB48’s 41st single, “Halloween Night,” released in 2015.

The song features Rino Sashihara—now active not only in variety shows but also as a producer—as the center, and it was used in a commercial for Asahi’s “WONDA Morning Shot.” With an allure that feels like it draws you into another world and slightly romantic lyrics, it’s a disco tune brimming with a grown-up mood and retro vibes, in addition to a catchiness reminiscent of “Koi Suru Fortune Cookie.” The lustrous vocals and laid-back rhythm are pleasant and sure to amp up Halloween, and it might also pair nicely with a relaxing drink when you’re feeling tired.

WANDA The Black: “Black Debut” Version

GET IT ONChase

The WANDA The Black commercial, “Black Appears,” features Junji Takada and Taichi Kokubun.

The ad uses the debut single “Get It On” by the American brass rock band Chase.

As you’d expect from a brass rock band, the triumphant, lavish brass lines make the melody soar and get you pumped up! If you listen to it when you’re feeling down, it’s sure to brighten your mood in an instant.

The song was a big hit in Japan as well and was even covered by Akiko Wada.

FIRE “Groundkeeper” Edition

YMCAVillage People

Former professional baseball player Hideki Matsui appears as a groundskeeper maintaining the field in the Kirin canned coffee “FIRE” commercial, titled “Groundskeeper.” The song used in this ad is the Village People’s classic “Y.M.C.A.” In Japan, Hideki Saijo’s cover “YOUNG MAN (Y.M.C.A.)” is well known! In Major League Baseball, just like Matsui in the commercial, groundskeepers perform a dance to this song after the end of the fifth inning.

Japan’s pro team the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters also use this song for a similar performance.

It’s a bright, energetic number that makes everyone want to strike the “YMCA” poses during the chorus!

WONDA “Wanda Wanda” Edition

Linda Linda (parody version)Bīto Takeshi, Gekidan Hitori, Sawabe Yū, Kamiki Ryūnosuke, Kawaei Rina

The song that Beat Takeshi, Gekidan Hitori, Yū Sawabe of Haraichi, Ryunosuke Kamiki, and Rina Kawaei—who serve as Wonda’s commercial spokespeople—sing in the commercial is “Linda Linda” by THE BLUE HEARTS.

Released in 1987 as their debut single, the song has been covered by artists such as Mari Natsuki and Mamoru Miyano, and has frequently been featured across various media.

In the commercial, they perform a parody version titled “Wonda Wonda.” The structure—building from the quiet opening into an explosive chorus—packs a massive punch!

SUNTORY BOSS

Aki Yashiro’s signature song, “Funauta.” Its deeply emotional melody really tugs at the heartstrings of the Japanese.

This richly atmospheric tune was also used in a commercial for Suntory’s BOSS coffee.

In the ad, Tommy Lee Jones’s character, Alien Jones, also savors a canned coffee “quietly and reflectively.” It might be a nice touch to enjoy a slightly lukewarm canned coffee—just like in the lyrics—when you’re drinking outside, on a break, or after work.

Suntory Craft Boss “Alien Jones: Farm” Version

Oh, beautiful oneOhnuki Taeko

Taeko Ohnuki – Beautiful Person (Album Version)
Oh, beautiful oneOhnuki Taeko

This song used in the SUNTORY Craft Boss commercial is actually an old tune called “La Violetera,” which was a hit in Spain in the 1920s, and Taeko Onuki sings it with Japanese lyrics she adapted.

Her charming, high, delicate voice matches the exotic atmosphere perfectly, making it a truly lovely piece.

Since the song has also been used in Charlie Chaplin’s film and in JR East commercials, many of you have probably heard it before.
