Science of CatchinessArukara

Arukara is a three-piece rock band that has long captivated fans with their alternative sound, calling themselves the “eccentric masters of rock.” “Katching wo Kagaku Suru” (“Studying Catchiness”), a track from their third album “Fiction wo Kagaku Suru” (“Studying Fiction”), is a number whose ensemble kicks off with a funky guitar riff that instantly lifts the energy.

The bass line, at times melodic and at times tight, supports the song while maintaining its presence in balance with the other parts.

It’s an uptempo tune whose bass sound evokes a sense of swirl within its driving momentum—one you’ll want to listen to closely with an ear for the low end.

With Sana from sajou no hana as the lead vocalist, MOB CHOIR is a musical unit created for the TV anime Mob Psycho 100.

Chosen as the opening theme for the anime’s second season, 99.9 makes a powerful impact right from the intro, which opens with a slapped bass.

The commanding bassline riding on a driving beat gives you a sense of the song’s overall swell and momentum.

It’s a cool rock tune whose aggressive bass playing ramps up the energy.

This is a digital single by chilldspot, a band drawing attention with genre-defying songs created by members with diverse musical backgrounds.

It’s the band’s first collaboration, featuring Taiwanese singer Linion, where a spacious bass line intertwines with a simple guitar riff to add accents to the ensemble.

The bass alternates between highlighting the melody and filling the gaps around it, achieving a perfect sense of distance that only the instrument can provide.

Though the phrases themselves are simple, it’s an emotional number where the bass’s presence is impossible to ignore.

A charismatic sensation, ATARASHII GAKKO! Their song “Otona Blue” is a captivating number driven by an aggressive bass.

In recent pop, tracks with such heavy low end might be rare.

That’s exactly why it sounds so fresh—familiar yet unlike anything we’ve really had before.

Also, don’t miss the bass phrase that hammers in time with the melody during the chorus’s signature moments! That heartbeat-like beat alone will get your energy soaring just by listening.

Kroi is a five-piece mixture band formed in Tokyo in 2018.

Their song “Drippin’ Desert” feels great thanks to ghost notes that make full use of 16th-note bass lines.

In particular, there’s a section where octave slap phrases incorporate thumb ghost notes and double plucks to great effect, resulting in a highly technical yet groove-rich bassline.

There’s also a part at the end with rapid-fire 16th-note runs, making it a bassline that keeps you on your toes until the very last moment—truly impressive!
