For older kindergarteners: December crafts that 5-year-olds will love — ideas from flat to three-dimensional projects
How about enjoying some fun crafts with children during the winter season? This time, we’re sharing enjoyable craft ideas perfect for five-year-olds, such as Christmas stockings and snow globes made with roll sticky notes, as well as wreaths featuring Santa and reindeer.
These can be made with familiar materials like construction paper, origami paper, and paper cups, so preparation is easy.
Encourage each child to use their imagination and enjoy creating their own original pieces! If you use them to decorate walls and other areas, you can instantly create a festive atmosphere.
Because the children's creations are treated as works of art, we use the term “seisaku” (制作) to refer to them in the text.

Magnet made with paper clay
Magnets in Christmas-themed shapes can serve as decorative objects that brighten up your room even after the holiday season has passed.
You can easily create shapes like Christmas trees and wreaths by cutting out paper clay with cookie cutters and painting them with acrylics once they’re dry.
Instead of varnish, try brushing on a layer of glue diluted with water to give them a glossy finish if possible.
Finally, attach a magnet with glue, and you’ll have a finished magnet you can stick on your fridge at home—give it a try!
Christmas with paper chains
When it comes to party wall decorations, paper chains are a classic.
A paper chain is a decoration made by linking paper loops together—you’ve probably seen one at least once.
There’s a way to give those paper chains a Christmas twist.
It’s simple: just draw Santa Claus’s or a reindeer’s face on the first loop.
Also, if you match the colors of the body loops to the theme, it adds to the atmosphere—red for Santa, brown for a reindeer, for example.

The ornaments on a Christmas tree shine so beautifully, don’t they? In this craft, we’ll make ornaments using plastic cup lids.
Cut origami paper into snowflakes, stick the snowflakes onto the plastic cup lids, and then add color with transparent light-blue origami.
If you like, decorate around the edges of the cup lids to enhance the sparkle and make them stand out.
Once your ornaments are finished, hang them on the tree and enjoy Christmas together!
Christmas snow globe
How about handmaking a dreamy Christmas snow globe with your kids? By using plastic cups, it’s super easy and kid-friendly.
First, roll some paper clay to make a snowman, and cut origami paper to create a Christmas tree.
Adding colorful round stickers to the tree will make it look festive! Next, draw any design you like on the plastic cup with your favorite pens.
Finally, attach each piece to a square-cut piece of thick paper, place the plastic cup over it, and you’re done! You can use cotton to represent snow or add glitter to really boost the Christmas mood!
Sparkly ornaments made with pipe cleaners and glue
How about making some sparkly ornaments to get into the Christmas spirit? You can create them with simple materials like chenille stems (pipe cleaners) and wood glue! First, shape a pipe cleaner into a triangle and apply wood glue around it.
Flip the pipe cleaner over and place it on a sheet of baking paper, then fill the inside with glue.
Next, dip a toothpick or similar tool into paint to draw patterns, and decorate with beads.
Once the glue is completely dry, slowly peel it off the baking paper—and it’s done! You can also try shaping the pipe cleaner into a star or a boot, and have fun changing up the paint colors.
