Patakara Oral Exercises – Blue Mountains

We’d like to introduce the Pataka-ra exercises performed to the familiar song “Blue Mountains,” well known among older adults.
Pataka-ra exercises are one of the standard training methods to prevent aspiration; by strengthening the mouth and tongue, they aim to maintain and improve oral functions such as eating and swallowing.
They’re easy to do—simply pronounce “pa,” “ta,” “ka,” and “ra” in time with the music.
Doing them before meals, in sync with the music, helps you enjoy your food and supports healthy living.
They’re also recommended as oral exercises in senior care facilities.
An exercise that can prevent aspiration and choking just by reading aloud: the Pa-Ta-Ka-Ra exercise

Patakara exercises are exercises that stimulate oral functions through pronunciation.
This time, we’ll introduce a method that uses reading aloud.
All you need to do is read the sentences written on a whiteboard out loud, so you can proceed at your own pace.
Another advantage is that if you jot the sentences down, you can do the exercises anywhere, including at home.
Benefits include improving chewing strength to aid digestion, enhancing swallowing ability to prevent accidental aspiration and the pneumonia it can cause, and increasing saliva production, which helps sterilize and disinfect the mouth.
Doing the exercises before meals can make them even more effective.
Pa-Ta-Ka-Ra finger exercises

Many care facilities incorporate the “Pa-Ta-Ka-Ra” oral exercises.
However, some older adults may get bored if it’s the same routine every time.
So let’s add finger movements to the usual Pa-Ta-Ka-Ra exercises.
While saying pa-ta-ka-ra out loud, clap your hands or make a “fox” hand pose and move your hands.
The key is to enjoy it.
You’ll be using both your mouth and your hands, which can be tricky at first if you’re not used to it.
But it’s fine to make mistakes.
We use both our mouths and hands when eating, right? Using your fingertips during the exercises also helps train the movements needed for meals.
Try doing Pa-Ta-Ka-Ra with added finger movements at the pace that suits the older adults.

It’s a program that trains the whole body while thinking, combining complex foot stomps and handclaps with the articulation of “pa-ta-ka-ra.” It starts with a simple flow of pronouncing “pa-ta-ka-ra” in time with the steps, then gradually becomes more complex by adding handclaps.
The key to adjusting difficulty is which letter of “pa-ta-ka-ra” you match the clap to.
Have participants try each letter in sequence so they can feel the increasing challenge.
It’s also important to ensure they don’t focus so much on the clap timing that they lose attention to the “pa-ta-ka-ra” articulation.
Pa-ta-ka-ra Exercises / Oral Function Training (11–20)
Patakara exercises with butterflies

We’d like to share an idea for training oral functions—such as chewing strength and swallowing ability—set to the well-known children’s song “Butterfly” (Chōchō).
The method is very simple: just replace the lyrics with the sounds pa-ta-ka-ra and sing along.
Because it’s a short song, you can do it anytime, anywhere, without worrying about the setting.
Doing it before meals serves as a warm-up for the mouth and helps prevent aspiration, so timing it before eating makes it even more effective.
Consistency is important, so please try to do it once a day.
Pa-ta-ka-ra pistol exercise

The “Pa-Ta-Ka-Ra” exercises are said to be effective for maintaining and improving oral function, but even if they work, some people might feel bored after a while.
For those people, we recommend the “Pa-Ta-Ka-Ra Pistol Exercise.” Shape your hand like a gun and, as if shooting bullets, say “Pa! Ta! Ka! Ra!” loudly while adding the corresponding movements.
You can also try other variations, such as saying “Pa-Ta-Ka-Ra!” in a short burst like firing a bullet, or continuing with “Pa-pa-pa-pa-pa!” like a machine gun.
Whatever you do, it’s more effective when you enjoy it rather than doing it on autopilot, so this is a great option if you want to change things up from your usual routine.
Patakara Exercises – Oyome Samba (Bride Samba)

We’d like to introduce a fun Patakara (pa-ta-ka-ra) exercise set to Hiromi Go’s classic hit “Oyome Samba.” Strengthening the mouth muscles improves your swallowing ability and helps prevent aspiration.
First, sing the song normally to check the music and rhythm.
From the second verse, replace the lyrics with the syllables “pa-ta-ka-ra.” If you’re up for it, try moving your hands with rock–paper–scissors (fist, open hand, V-sign) at the same time—doing multiple actions simultaneously can also provide brain-training benefits.
Aim to do it at least once a day; before meals is recommended.
