[For Women] Sing difficult songs at karaoke and get noticed! (111–120)

TipTapShimizu Miisa

Misa Shimizu is a female singer who’s active not only in the music scene but also on variety shows, thanks to her bright personality and strong vocal skills.

Influenced by Western music, she consistently showcases techniques that rival those of overseas artists.

Among her songs, the one I especially recommend is TipTap.

Because it’s a jazzy track, it doesn’t lean on obvious challenges like high notes; instead, it demands more advanced techniques such as groove and vocal improvisation (feats/“fakes”).

Akatsuki SakuraGARNiDELiA

This is GARNiDELiA’s 18th digital single, released in October 2023.

It was produced as the 7th-anniversary song for the mobile game Onmyoji.

It’s a cool, upbeat track with a distinctly Eurobeat-inspired arrangement.

In the song, vocalist MARiA delivers a performance that maintains strength without ever sounding timid, while clearly expressing dynamics between phrases and sections.

Including its melodic development, it’s a highly challenging song to sing, which makes it an ideal choice when you want to draw attention from those around you.

LOVE or HATE?Maeshima Mayu

This is a digital single by Mayu Maeshima, released in January 2024.

It was selected as the opening theme for the TV anime ‘Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I’m Not the Demon Lord.’ With its very powerful high-tone vocals and slightly idiosyncratic phrasing and vocal nuances, it’s a difficult song with several hurdles to clear if you want to sing it well.

Precisely for that reason, it’s a track I’d love confident singers to take on.

Not only does it require consistently powerful vocal delivery, but the rhythm and groove of the so-called digi-rock backing track are also crucial points for performing it.

Be sure to study those aspects thoroughly before you give it a try.

The strong and fleeting onesCocco

This was Cocco’s second major-label single, released in November 1997.

As of 2023, it remains her best-selling single, and it was also used as the CM song for Japan Airlines’ “JAL Hawaii Campaign.” The track has a generally warm, easygoing mood throughout, without dramatic melodic shifts.

However, if you listen with a focus on Cocco’s vocals, you’ll notice that even within this gentle song she consistently sings with a powerful, steady core.

It might be a slightly niche choice if you’re aiming to showcase your vocal prowess to others, but it’s a song I highly recommend practicing so you can perform it like Cocco herself.

Cabo da RocaDAZBEE

Songs with dramatic pitch jumps are difficult, but pieces with relatively constant pitch also present their own challenges.

On top of that, when there are fewer lyrics, there are more long tones, which means there are no moments where you can hide anything while singing.

‘Cabo da Roca,’ performed by the Korean singer DAZBEE, is a work of that type.

It isn’t intense, but because you have to keep both a whispery voice and falsetto stable at a high level, it can be said to demand solid fundamental vocal skills.
