Classic & Team Competition Indoor Games and Relays (1–10)
Ball-passing race

The Ball-Passing Race is a game you can play with any number of people as long as you have one ball.
First, line up in two vertical rows.
Then everyone sits down with their legs spread apart.
Raise both hands at this time.
When the person at the front is holding the ball, at the signal “Ready, go!” they pass the ball to the person behind them.
When passing, make sure the ball goes over your head.
Keep passing the ball along like this.
When it reaches the last person, everyone stands up and this time sends the ball back to the front by passing it forward between their legs.
You can also enjoy the game by freely changing how you pass the ball!
Hula hoop relay

A “hula hoop relay” is a relay race done in pairs.
Unlike a regular relay, two people step inside a single hula hoop and run together.
It’s similar to a three-legged race.
You’ll need items like a hula hoop and triangular cones to mark the turnaround point.
It’s more exciting as a team competition, so start by dividing everyone into teams.
Once teams are set, line up in two rows and get ready.
Pairs take turns stepping into the hula hoop together, running, and passing the relay on.
The team that finishes first wins.
Jama-Jama Ball Toss

With its somewhat cute name, “Jama-Jama Tamaire” (literally, “Obstructive Ball Toss”).
You split into two teams, and while it’s fun to play regular tamaire, this version features a ‘Jama-Jama’ who shows up to interfere with the ball toss.
They hold large boards in both hands to defend and keep balls from going into the basket, even jumping to bat them back.
When the balls just won’t go in, people get stubborn—and the excitement ramps up!
Group boat race
@hiyoko_sakuranbo You can start tomorrow! Group rhythm “Boat Race” “Solo boat” and “Two-person boat” are fun, but doing it as a group of 7 or 8 is even more fun! If you include it at the end of a requested staff training, the teachers’ smiles burst forth, and you can finish the session in a joyful atmosphere. It’s the same with children. If you end with a rhythm activity everyone can enjoy together, you’re sure to see the biggest smiles. ✨ Give it a try in tomorrow’s childcare! **************** “Saito Kimiko’s Cherry Rhythm Play” is a scientifically grounded method that promotes children’s development through play. Perfect for class recreation or grade-level activities! Here are ideas for a group boat race.
You know how rowing is an Olympic sport, right? This time, we’re sharing ideas for a boat race played in groups.
In the video, teams of seven sit in a row and inch forward toward the goal by pushing with their heels.
It’s not just the person in front who does the work—when everyone on the team synchronizes their timing, you can make big progress! It’s also a good idea to use a chant like “1, 2, 1, 2” or “Ready, go!”
Centipede ball-passing game

A simple yet thrilling “Centipede Ball Pass” game! Teams line up in single file and pass the ball along—such simple rules, yet it’s guaranteed to get everyone excited.
While being careful not to drop the ball, players alternately pass it overhead and between their legs to the person behind them.
Because it requires teamwork, it’s perfect for schools and community events.
Each team might even come up with strategies for how to pass the ball more smoothly.
Shuttle Carry Relay

Here’s a shuttle-carry relay that kids and adults alike can enjoy.
Split into teams, place a badminton shuttlecock on top of a racket, and ready, set, go! Keep the racket level so the shuttle doesn’t fall, loop around a cone, and come back.
Hand the racket and shuttle directly to the next person, and the team that gets everyone across the finish line first wins.
If you drop the shuttle, restart from where it fell—so staying careful yet fast is the key to victory.
The rules are simple and easy to understand, so give it a try!
Hula hoop down

Form an inward-facing circle with your team, extend your index fingers, and place a hula hoop on top of them.
Everyone lowers their fingers in sync, and if you can set the hula hoop down on the ground, you succeed.
It looks easy, but coordinating everyone’s timing is surprisingly difficult—this game requires a good sense of balance.
Sideways tug-of-war

Unlike regular tug-of-war, “sideways tug-of-war” is played by pulling the rope sideways.
Since you just pull the rope to the side, it’s an easy-to-understand game.
It also doesn’t require the large, specialized rope used in standard tug-of-war, making it perfect for recreational activities.
You can set the rules and how to determine the winner to suit the players.
It can be enjoyed even when there’s a size difference, such as adults versus children.
Classic & Team Competition Indoor Games/Relays (11–20)
obstacle course

If you’re looking for a game that lets you make the most of what’s in the gym and have a blast, this is a must-see! Introducing an obstacle race.
The rules are super simple: start at the signal “Ready, go!” and make your way to the finish line by overcoming various obstacles set up along the course.
The team whose members all finish first wins.
Gyms usually have plenty of items that can be used as obstacles—vaulting boxes, mats, balance beams, hula hoops, tunnels, hurdles, and more—so try creating courses with different combinations and have fun playing!
Balloon carrying race

This “Balloon Carrying Race” is best played indoors where there’s no wind.
It uses lightweight items—newspaper and a balloon—so both small children and older adults can enjoy it.
The rules are simple: two people hold a single sheet of newspaper and carry a balloon placed on top.
It sounds easy, but because the balloon is so light, it doesn’t stay stable on the newspaper.
You can add handicaps by switching to a small water-balloon-sized balloon or a giant balloon.
Older kids might even try hopping on one foot while carrying it.
It’s a highly recommended indoor recreation with lots of ways to get creative.
