[2026] Japan’s Leading Famous Drummers — Introducing Veterans to Rising Stars (21–30)
Sugar Song and Bitter StepSuzuki Takao

Takao Suzuki is active as the drummer of UNISON SQUARE GARDEN, and the band is hugely popular—even people who don’t usually listen to rock know them! Their appeal lies in their catchy, approachable songs, but within those tracks, each member’s high level of musicianship really shines.
Of course, Suzuki’s drumming is outstanding as well, with melodic, diverse phrases that add flair to the music and fills that showcase superb hand-foot combinations—there are plenty of drum-specific highlights throughout their songs!
ALRIGHTKikuchi Eiji

The drummer of THE YELLOW MONKEY, who reunited in 2016, is Eiji Kikuchi.
Within the band he’s called ANNIE.
As the youngest member, he often gets teased by the others.
Emma, the band’s guitarist, is his older brother.
VictoryBandō Satoshi

Satoshi Bandoh is the drummer of T-SQUARE.
A highly skilled musician, he was chosen as T-SQUARE’s official drummer at the young age of 21.
Unusually for a drummer, he has also released solo albums.
Despite his small stature, his appeal lies in his drumming, which is both delicate and dynamic.
RYDEENTakahashi Yukihiro
Isn’t it fair to say there’s hardly another drummer as multi-talented as Yukihiro Takahashi? He’s a drummer, a designer, and a writer.
The members of his current unit, METAFIVE, include big names like Cornelius.
Their sound is cool—I highly recommend them!
Ultramarine DaysHatake Toshiki

Mr.
Toshiki Hata, who serves as the drummer for the rock band Tokyo Jihen—one of the most overwhelmingly popular acts in Japan’s rock scene—also supports numerous artists in both recording sessions and live performances.
When performing with Tokyo Jihen, he works under the name Izumi Hata (Hata Toshiki stylized as Hata Tōiro/“Hata Tsurairo”).
His greatest appeal is, without question, his chameleon-like phrasing.
At first listen, you might find yourself thinking, “What on earth is going on!?” as he plays bewilderingly intricate figures, yet they fit seamlessly into song-centric arrangements.
He’s also known as a left-handed drummer, and his distinctive setup and playing style are among his trademarks.
speedYagami Tooru

While the other members of BUCK-TICK have been changing with age, I’m amazed that Toll hasn’t changed at all.
The name Yagami Toll isn’t his real name; his eldest brother, who was also a drummer and died young, was named Toru (亨), so he took on his brother’s name.
WantedMurakami Shuichi

Shuichi Murakami, known as the drummer for the folk group Akai Tori and for his own band PONTA BOX.
Many people also know him by the credit name Shuichi “PONTA” Murakami.
The appeal of his drumming lies in its powerful feel and the way it locks in perfectly, right on the beat.
His drums are often described as “singing,” and his highly expressive, groove-rich playing has made him one of Japan’s top drummers, influencing many others.
