Mr.

Toshiki Hata, who serves as the drummer for the rock band Tokyo Jihen—one of the most overwhelmingly popular acts in Japan’s rock scene—also supports numerous artists in both recording sessions and live performances.

When performing with Tokyo Jihen, he works under the name Izumi Hata (Hata Toshiki stylized as Hata Tōiro/“Hata Tsurairo”).

His greatest appeal is, without question, his chameleon-like phrasing.

At first listen, you might find yourself thinking, “What on earth is going on!?” as he plays bewilderingly intricate figures, yet they fit seamlessly into song-centric arrangements.

He’s also known as a left-handed drummer, and his distinctive setup and playing style are among his trademarks.

ROCKET DIVEMiyawaki “JOE” Tomofumi

Tomofumi Miyawaki “JOE” is a drummer active with 44MAGNUM, ZIGGY, and hide with Spread Beaver.

Debuting with 44MAGNUM at age 19, he has continued performing on the front lines to this day and is also a very striking drummer in terms of visual presence.

BLANKEY JET CITY was also a band bursting with individuality, but I think it held together precisely because Mr.

Nakamura stood solidly behind it.

He was active not only in music but also as an actor, and that unbelievably cool, rugged aura of his is impossible to overlook.

It’s no exaggeration to say Tomoyasu Kawamura is one of the drummers supporting the rhythm section of today’s J-pop.

He’s also well known by his nickname “Kāsuke.” He began his career as a professional drummer in 1981, and from the late ’90s he has been active as support for recordings and live performances by musicians at the forefront of the J-pop scene, such as Ringo Sheena, aiko, and Keisuke Kuwata.

Since then, you could say he’s been involved behind almost every popular J-pop artist.

The charm of his drumming lies above all in a playing style that could be described as thoroughly behind-the-scenes, with an emphasis on ensemble across the entire track.

He’s a drummer who firmly underpins the foundation of a song while distinctly shaping its groove.

Shuichi Murakami, known as the drummer for the folk group Akai Tori and for his own band PONTA BOX.

Many people also know him by the credit name Shuichi “PONTA” Murakami.

The appeal of his drumming lies in its powerful feel and the way it locks in perfectly, right on the beat.

His drums are often described as “singing,” and his highly expressive, groove-rich playing has made him one of Japan’s top drummers, influencing many others.

Kin-ichi Motegi plays drums for Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra.

He originally performed with Fishmans, but the group effectively ceased activity following the passing of their vocalist, Mr.

Sato.

He has been a member of Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra since 2001.

Many of you may not know Tetsu Kikuchi, but his drumming skills are exceptional.

It makes sense, since his mentor is Tomofumi Miyawaki “JOE” from 44MAGNUM.

Nero from the band Merry, who is also Kikuchi’s disciple, is insanely good as well.
