[For Seniors] June-Themed Activities: Recommended Recreation and Game Collection

We’d like to introduce some June-perfect recreational activities for seniors.

June is the rainy season in Japan.

Since it’s hard to go outside, many people tend to become inactive.

We’ve gathered recommended activities and games for times like these.

Why not enjoy the rainy season with flowers, creatures, and items associated with the monsoon? We also recommend choosing indoor activities that allow for gentle exercise to help prevent a lack of physical activity.

Let’s lift everyone’s spirits and have fun together, even on rainy days.

Do you all usually listen to music often? Listening alone with headphones or holed up in your room is great, but how about getting together with a bunch of people and holding a music appreciation gathering? Back in elementary school, we used to go to classical concerts and have music appreciation days, right? It’s nice to listen to all kinds of genres, not just classical.

Since June 9 is Rock Day, a rock-listening party sounds like a great idea too!

What fish can be eaten in Kagawa Prefecture in June?

When it comes to fish you can eat in Kagawa Prefecture in June, what comes to mind? Only some Kagawa locals or true fish connoisseurs might be able to answer! The answer to this quiz is “dojo” (loach)! It’s said that loach are at their most delicious from June to July, just before spawning, and they’re characterized by being lighter and less fatty than eel.

In some parts of Kagawa, a local specialty called “dojo-jiru” (loach soup)—in which loach are simmered in a pot with burdock root, eggplant, taro, udon, and other ingredients—is widely enjoyed.

Loach are also considered a stamina-boosting food.

If you pose this as a quiz and the conversation starts to take off, you might find yourself craving some!

When it gets hot, you can’t help but want a uchiwa fan! How about making one by hand? Since it’s the rainy season, why not design it with hydrangeas, the flowers commonly seen in June? In the video, fabric is used to shape the petals and stick them onto the fan, but you could also draw them, make hydrangeas with origami, or even attach real flowers like pressed blossoms! And as we head into the height of summer, a design featuring summer flowers could be great too.

Making picture letters

Have you ever written an illustrated letter or picture postcard? Precisely because it’s a rainy season when it’s hard to go out, why not sit down and try handwriting one of these? June 15 is “Shōchū-mimai Day,” the day when summer greeting postcards were first released.

The period for sending shōchū-mimai is from Shōsho—the solar term that comes around when the rainy season ends, about July 7—until around August 7, when Risshū (the start of autumn) arrives.

But once the rainy season ends, you’ll want to head outside, right? So, let’s write postcards during the rainy season before then! How about sending one to someone dear to you, with colorful, seasonally themed drawings and a few warm words?

June 1 is said to be “Photography Day.” It was established by the Japan Photographic Society in 1951.

With the spread of mobile phones, we’ve entered an era where anyone can easily take and keep photos, making photography even more familiar.

So how about having some proper photos taken? Getting your picture taken at a photo studio is great, and gathering the family for a group photo is also a nice idea.

Lavender viewing

Depending on the variety, lavender can be early-blooming or late-blooming.

Early-blooming lavender starts flowering from June, and since there are many other flowers in the flower garden as well, it’s also recommended to enjoy viewing various flowers when you go to see the lavender.

Did you know that, thanks to a wordplay on the date, June 4th is “Steamed Bun Day” in Japan? Since there’s even an official day for it, how about enjoying a steamed bun-making activity as a June recreation? The ingredients are flour, sugar, eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and baking powder.

Just keep mixing the ingredients together and steam them in a steamer, and you’ll have simple, nostalgic steamed buns.

It’s also fun to make variations by adding things like chocolate or sweet potato.

And if you don’t have a steamer, there are easy recipes you can make in the microwave.
