[For Seniors] June-Themed Activities: Recommended Recreation and Game Collection

We’d like to introduce some June-perfect recreational activities for seniors.

June is the rainy season in Japan.

Since it’s hard to go outside, many people tend to become inactive.

We’ve gathered recommended activities and games for times like these.

Why not enjoy the rainy season with flowers, creatures, and items associated with the monsoon? We also recommend choosing indoor activities that allow for gentle exercise to help prevent a lack of physical activity.

Let’s lift everyone’s spirits and have fun together, even on rainy days.

[For Seniors] June-Themed Activities: Recommended Recreations and Games (21–30)

Umbrella ferrule holder

Today's activity: Tamaire (ball toss) in Umbrella
Umbrella ferrule holder

This recreation uses an umbrella and some balls.

Open the umbrella, place it on the floor with the handle pointing upward, and attach papers with point values between the ribs.

At the start signal, participants throw balls and compete to see who can land a ball in the highest-scoring spot.

If you have multiple balls, you can set a number of throws per person and compete on total points.

For those who have difficulty throwing, bouncing the ball off the floor makes it easier to play.

If you prepare balls of different sizes and weights, the way they bounce will vary, which might help players score higher!

Snail Brain Gymnastics

Tatsu-Grandma’s Brain Training: Boost Your Brain with the Snail Finger Exercise – Caregiving Entertainer Ryusei Ishida
Snail Brain Gymnastics

Here’s a fun “snail brain exercise” you can enjoy anytime, whether you’re sitting in a chair or lying on a bed.

The method is very simple! Make scissors with one hand and a fist with the other.

Place the fist on top of the scissors to represent a snail.

At a signal, switch which hand is the fist and which is the scissors, and try to place the fist on top of the scissors to make the snail each time.

Start slowly at first, and as you get used to it, speed up to increase the difficulty.

It could be even more fun to add hand claps in between, or move your hands to music, not just the snail! Give it a try.

Frog Hop-Hop Showdown

[Senior Recreation] Rec Artisan Series Part 239: 'Frogs Pyoko Pyoko, Three Pyoko Pyoko'
Frog Hop-Hop Showdown

A cute frog folded from origami.

This frog actually jumps—if you press its tail end with your finger and let go, it springs into the air! The game using this frog is called “Frog Boing-Boing Showdown.” It’s played in pairs.

First, sit facing each other across a desk and place a paper leaf (made from construction paper, etc.) in the middle of the desk.

At the signal to start, make your frog hop as described and try to land it on the leaf.

The first person to get all of their frogs onto the leaf wins.

There’s a link to the frog-making instructions in the video description, so be sure to check it out!

Crab Wrestling

Ready, set—milk carton! Crab sumo
Crab Wrestling

June 22 is apparently “Crab Day,” established in 1990 by Kani Douraku (Douraku Crab).

In the Japanese syllabary, “ka” is the 6th character and “ni” is the 22nd, plus June 22 is the first day of the Cancer zodiac sign, so that’s why the date was chosen.

So let’s enjoy some “crab sumo”! Crab sumo? Not paper sumo? That’s the vibe, right? (lol).

You can easily make crabs using the top part of a milk carton.

Then tap-tap on a platform… just like paper sumo!

Steamed Bread Rhythmic Gymnastics

[Senior Recreation] June 4: Steamed Bun Rhythm Exercises
Steamed Bread Rhythmic Gymnastics

If you’re looking for some light, active recreation, why not try the “Steamed Bun Exercise”? June 4 is a wordplay-based “Steamed Bun Day” in Japanese, and this exercise turns steamed buns into a fun set of movements you can do while seated, with variations available.

The basic moves are: for “mu,” use both hands to show the shape of the number 6; for “shi,” show the number 4; and for “pan,” clap your hands together.

Once you get used to it, add variety by, for example, touching your feet together instead of clapping for “pan,” or doing “pan” twice to change up the rhythm.

Popcorn Game

Ready in no time! 😆 Popcorn you can bounce and pop with your feet 🍿 #SeniorActivities #DementiaPrevention #DayService #Easy #Recreation #shorts
Popcorn Game

Even if you know that moving your body is good for your health, you might still feel reluctant to get active.

So here’s a fun popcorn game that lets you exercise your feet while enjoying yourself.

Sit in a chair and place paper plates on both knees.

Fill the plates with lots of crumpled-up paper balls.

Think of the paper plates as frying pans and the crumpled paper as popcorn for the game.

When someone says, “Ready, start!”, flutter your legs and march your feet to shake the paper popcorn out of the plates.

Watching the crumpled paper fall from the plates looks just like popcorn popping in a heated frying pan.

Because it’s an exercise you can do like a game, it seems like older adults can enjoy participating too.

Insect Quiz

Insect Quiz

As adults, we don’t really have many chances to interact with insects, do we? Maybe if you have grandchildren at home, it’s different.

June 4th is “Insect Day” in Japan, based on a wordplay with the date.

How about doing an insect quiz together? I often hear that people aren’t great with bugs in general, but insects are fascinating and full of depth! There’s so much we don’t know about them, so it can be really educational.
