[For Seniors] June-Themed Activities: Recommended Recreation and Game Collection

We’d like to introduce some June-perfect recreational activities for seniors.

June is the rainy season in Japan.

Since it’s hard to go outside, many people tend to become inactive.

We’ve gathered recommended activities and games for times like these.

Why not enjoy the rainy season with flowers, creatures, and items associated with the monsoon? We also recommend choosing indoor activities that allow for gentle exercise to help prevent a lack of physical activity.

Let’s lift everyone’s spirits and have fun together, even on rainy days.

For Seniors: June-Themed Activities. Recommended Recreation and Game Collection (1–10)

footbath

June 26 is “Open-Air Bath Day” in Japanese wordplay.

Since enjoying an outdoor hot spring can be a bit of a hurdle, how about everyone trying a “footbath” instead? For older adults, have them stay seated in a chair and prepare warm water in a bucket or washbasin so they can enjoy a footbath.

If they move while their feet are still wet, there’s a risk of slipping, so make sure they dry their feet thoroughly before standing up.

Even soaking just the feet makes you feel toasty warm, and gradually your whole body warms up and you’ll feel wonderful.

June sing-along

Fun recreations using Showa-era pop and children’s songs! Here are some ideas for June sing-along activities.

What songs come to mind when you think of ones you feel attached to? Remembering nostalgic tunes and the events associated with them stimulates the parts of the brain responsible for memory.

This time, let’s try a sing-along activity that can also help relieve stress.

The act of recalling lyrics and melodies may help prevent dementia, too.

Before you know it, singing will bring out lots of smiles.

Bug-catching game

Bug-catching game

June 4th is “Insect Day” in Japan, thanks to a pun on the date.

As temperatures rise, you might think it’s time to go bug hunting—but June’s rain often keeps us indoors.

The good news is, you can still hunt bugs inside! Here’s how: first, draw lots and lots of bugs on plenty of sheets of paper and attach magnets to them.

Then make a small net for catching the bugs and attach a magnet to that as well.

Compete to see how many bugs you can catch within the time limit by using the magnets on the net and the bugs.

In the video, they play with a rule that you can only catch flying insects from among the many drawings.

Since the fun starts with drawing the pictures, you won’t be bored on rainy days! And when it’s sunny, let’s go look for real insects, too!

Balloon Home Run Game

[Cheerful Rec 🏀] Home Run Derby at 80! Next week’s activity has to be this: Balloon Baseball Game
Balloon Home Run Game

June 19 is Baseball Day, you know.

Did you know that? In honor of the day, how about trying a balloon home run game? In this activity, you place a balloon on a tee and hit it far with a sponge bat.

It gets even more exciting if you set rules like “It’s a home run if it goes this far,” or “It’s a hit if it lands in this box.” By the way, the larger the balloon, the farther it tends to fly.

Prepare balloons of a good size and let everyone rack up home runs!

A game where you put newspaper balls into an umbrella

[June Limited Activity] Stuff the umbrella with as many newspaper balls as you can!!
A game where you put newspaper balls into an umbrella

It’s great that you can play this while staying seated! Here’s an idea for a game where you toss newspaper balls into an umbrella.

June in Japan is the rainy season, with lots of rain.

And when it rains, you tend to use umbrellas more often.

This time, let’s do a recreation activity using an umbrella and newspaper.

First, tear the newspaper with a rip and crumple it to make newspaper balls.

Once you open an umbrella and set it on a table or on the floor, you’re ready to go.

It’s a simple yet exciting game where you throw the newspaper balls into the gently swaying umbrella!

Paper cup drop

Here’s a game using paper cups.

Line up the paper cups in a row.

Use the lined-up cups as targets and have older adults throw a ball at them from a short distance away.

Depending on where you set up the cups, the goal is to throw the ball so that the cups tip over or fall to the floor.

Even if they don’t hit the cups perfectly, it’s likely to spark laughter and provide a nice change of pace.

It can also encourage conversation with others and help expand social interaction among older adults.

Paper cups are sold at 100-yen shops, so preparation is easy.

Frog Frisbee Game

[Recreation] Aim for the frog’s mouth and throw the frisbee! Throw it! (Sawayaka Muroran Building No. 2)
Frog Frisbee Game

June 6 is designated as Frog Day because the Japanese onomatopoeia “kero-kero” (ribbit) can be read from the date.

Frogs have long been beloved as creatures that let us feel the seasons.

I’d like to introduce a recreation activity themed around this commemorative frog day: the Frog Frisbee Game.

First, make a target out of cardboard with a frog motif.

Then make a cardboard frisbee and start throwing.

It might also be fun to design the target as a frog’s mouth so it looks like you’re feeding it.
