A simple quiz where you present autumn-related items in kanji and have participants answer with their readings.
It’s a test of how much we value the seasons, featuring tasty foods of autumn and plants that change color in fall.
The items that appear frequently in conversation are less often written in kanji, so even familiar things might be unknown in their kanji forms.
It’s also a good idea to include items like “どんぐり” (acorns) or “コオロギ” (crickets), which are strongly associated with hiragana or katakana spellings.

Here is an idea for a fall-themed quiz that also serves as brain training.
Ask participants, “What comes to mind when you think of September?” and write their answers on a whiteboard.
Based on the words that come up, expand into a word-association game using the initial letters or themes.
For example, if someone says “tsukimi” (moon viewing), you can think of foods that start with “tsu,” and so on.
As people associate words, seasonal topics naturally arise, helping stimulate memory, vocabulary, and creativity.
Adding a time limit or team competition boosts the game aspect and encourages smiles and conversation.
By starting with familiar topics, it lowers the barrier to participation and makes an excellent fall recreation activity that can also serve as a conversation starter for older adults.
A wordplay using the letters “BC”

Let’s combine symbols and letters to think it through! This is a wordplay puzzle using “BC.” It shows the characters “Star BC,” which don’t have motion or color, so it might be hard to find the answer from that alone.
The hints are that it refers to an actor and that the “A” in “ABC” has been replaced by a star.
The answer is “movie star.” It’s a clever twist where the “A” becomes a “star,” so it makes sense once you hear it! Bursts of insight stimulate the brain, so try posing it to people around you.
A witty wordplay using “shō” and “jō”

Let’s solve a riddle that looks like an official-style problem! It’s a wordplay puzzle using “shou” and “jou.” The display shows “shou × 2” and “jou ÷ 2.” The hints are that it suggests a bustling crowd, and that “shou” is doubled while “jou” is halved.
The answer is “shoubai hanjou,” meaning “prosperous business.” It makes sense if you think of it as “shou” multiplied and “jou” halved—“shou-bai” and “han-jou.” It’s a perfect brain teaser with clever wordplay, and once you get it, it’s quite satisfying.
Give it a try!
A wordplay puzzle using the characters “mi” and “ri”

ひらがなを組み合わせよう!「み」と「り」を使った言葉遊びパズルだよ。
The character “み” is stacked vertically and is sandwiched by “り” on both sides.
The hints are that it’s a food and that there are two “mi” with “ri” on both sides.
The answer is “nikomi ryōri” (simmered dishes).
Thinking of two “mi” and “ri” on both sides, you might go “I see!” Simmered dishes like nikujaga, oden, and nimono warm both the heart and body.
A wordplay rebus using the characters “ri,” “u,” and “n”

Let's focus on each character's distinctive features and think! Here's a wordplay puzzle using the characters “り,” “う,” and “ん.” You can see a blue “り,” a black “う,” and an “ん” that has fallen over.
There’s not much uniformity, so many people might need time to reach the answer.
The hints are that it’s a phrase describing a dangerous act, and that in addition to the blue “ri,” the “n” has toppled over.
The answer is “あおり運転” (aggressive driving/road rage tailgating).
Once you hear it, you think, “Oh, that’s what it means!”

A wordplay character puzzle using ‘イ’ and ‘物’

Let’s try a word puzzle that combines characters! This is a puzzle using the characters “イ” and “物.” The katakana “イ” is placed inside the kanji “物.” The hints are that the character “物” is split, and that “イ” is inside it.
The answer is “Handle with care (Fragile).” Once you get it, you might feel totally refreshed.
The puzzle giver can adjust how the hints are presented, so everyone can have fun and enjoy a wonderful time participating.
