A lot of great music is coming out of Taiwan, too.

You’ll find plenty of tracks with a city-pop vibe and songs featuring standout vocals.

In this article, I’ll be introducing Taiwanese artists like these!

From veteran singers to must-watch up-and-coming acts, we’ll cover a wide range.

Taiwan’s Golden Melody Awards—the country’s equivalent of the Grammys—are a lot of fun, and you might even discover artists who already feel familiar to Japanese listeners.

WeiQi, born and raised in Taipei, is of Paiwan indigenous heritage and is known for her richly expressive vocals sung in the Paiwan language.

She grew up listening to Western music, and much of her work carries a calm, jazz- and R&B-tinged vibe.

She writes and composes her own songs.

Her 2020 track Taipei Wind was supported by Abao, a fellow Paiwan artist who won three awards at the 31st Golden Melody Awards.

The album žž, which includes this song, was nominated for Best Indigenous Language Singer and Best Indigenous Language Album at the 32nd Golden Melody Awards.

A Taiwanese band that rose to fame through the student movement and has continued to release songs with strong social and political messages.

A distinctive feature is that they sing in Taiwanese rather than Standard Mandarin.

This song was created with the theme of supporting recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the music video was filmed in Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture.

It’s a masterpiece that’s sure to move Japanese listeners to tears with the band’s passionate spirit.

I am a little bird. Ding-dang

Della, originally from mainland China and now active in Taiwan.

This song, which begins with her self-introduction, centers on the hardships and pain of pursuing a dream, mirroring her own journey: she started flying from place to place at 18 to become a singer and it took ten years before she finally blossomed.

Keeping that background in mind makes her powerful vocals all the more moving.

A three-man male group formed in 2009.

Their lyrics blend Mandarin and Taiwanese, a hallmark that resonates with many Taiwanese listeners.

This song tells the earnest story of a man whose relationship is opposed and who wishes to be united with his lover in the next life.

The music video, curiously styled like a zombie movie with a narrative structure, ends with an unexpected twist.

The English name “Sho” comes from the Japanese reading of the character 祥.

He’s a multi-talented, ardent Japanophile who learned dance from TRF’s SAM and has even released a duet with Kumi Koda.

The title, when rendered in Japanese, bewilderingly means “The Theme of Love is a Burp,” but the song itself is stylish dance music—another surprising contrast.
