[2026] Taiwanese singers: introducing popular artists from young talents to veterans [C-POP]

Asian music—particularly Mandopop—has been growing more and more popular every year.

A lot of great music is coming out of Taiwan, too.

You’ll find plenty of tracks with a city-pop vibe and songs featuring standout vocals.

In this article, I’ll be introducing Taiwanese artists like these!

From veteran singers to must-watch up-and-coming acts, we’ll cover a wide range.

Taiwan’s Golden Melody Awards—the country’s equivalent of the Grammys—are a lot of fun, and you might even discover artists who already feel familiar to Japanese listeners.

He is a singer known by the nickname “JJ.” Although born in Singapore, he has been active as a singer in Taiwan, releasing many songs for dramas and commercials.

His work has achieved major hits not only in Taiwan but later in his home country of Singapore as well.

He has also appeared in music videos by Japanese artists, making him popular in Japan too.

With the addition of female member Mandark to their predecessor band Natural Q Voice, this five-piece was formed in Tainan in 2016.

Their hallmark is the male–female twin vocals.

In 2018, their debut album “Dear” garnered recognition at Taiwan’s “Golden Melody Awards,” the local equivalent of the Grammys.

Some members draw influence from R&B and jazz, giving their music a chic, smooth sound that’s easy on the ears and evokes a variety of sonic scenes.

The technical side that underpins their whispery mood may reflect the intentions of guitarist Can Tou, a devoted fan of Ringo Sheena and Tokyo Jihen.

Jay Chou is a Taiwan-born singer who also thrives as an actor and TV host.

His popularity extends beyond his home country, with an active presence across Asia, particularly in Japan and South Korea.

He has worked across a wide range of genres—including Mandopop, R&B, and classical music loved in China—and releases songs with a distinctive artistic vision.

After writing hit songs for globally popular artists like Vivian Hsu and Leehom Wang, he made his debut as a singer.

With a sweet voice that soothes listeners, he quickly cemented his popularity.

He is an artist active across a broad spectrum, including film and variety shows.

Sodagreen is a band you can’t leave out when talking about Taiwanese music.

Formed in 2001 by frontman Wu Qing-feng—admired by many famous singers—and bassist Xin-i, they expanded to a six-member lineup in 2003 and went on to release numerous hits, winning awards such as Best Band and Best Album at the Golden Melody Awards, Taiwan’s equivalent of the Grammys.

2017年からの活動休止を経て、彼らは2020年に復帰し、7月にバンド名を「魚丁糸(Yudingxian)」に変更した。

Their music is characterized by soundscapes that cherish imagery and atmosphere, including albums themed around the four seasons.

Their songs are rich with delicate, ephemeral touches and beautiful melodies within a pop framework.

Jooem Barber is a female R&B singer born in Taipei.

She majored in jazz at New York’s prestigious The School of Jazz & Contemporary Music.

Her artist name comes from her English name and a number associated with that school.

She was selected for Tower Records’ “Tawarekomen,” performed at Summer Sonic in 2019, and has collaborated with artists such as AAAMYYY and her band Tempalay, giving her close ties to Japan.

She has also covered Mariya Takeuchi’s classic “Plastic Love,” and many of her tracks are mellow and comfortable.

She’s a next-generation artist highly recommended for fans of city pop!

Hebe Tien, a singer from Hsinchu County who debuted in 2001 as a member of the Taiwanese idol group S.H.E, began her solo career in 2010 with the album “To Hebe.” The theme song of the 2016 film “Our Times,” “A Little Happiness,” became the first Mandarin song to surpass 100 million views on YouTube and remains widely loved.

With her stunning beauty and music that exudes a calm atmosphere—distinct from S.H.E’s bright and energetic style—she captivates fans.

Her warm, heartfelt vocals are also deeply appealing.

Mayday is a national band that enjoys immense popularity in Taiwan, where the history of band culture is said to be relatively young.

They have also performed in Japan multiple times, both in collaborations with well-known artists and in solo concerts.

This song, titled “The Us Afterward,” is a bittersweet yet forward-looking ballad about trying to move on—harboring a touch of lingering feelings for a past lover while wishing them happiness.
