Asian music—particularly Mandopop—has been growing more and more popular every year.

A lot of great music is coming out of Taiwan, too.

You’ll find plenty of tracks with a city-pop vibe and songs featuring standout vocals.

In this article, I’ll be introducing Taiwanese artists like these!

From veteran singers to must-watch up-and-coming acts, we’ll cover a wide range.

Taiwan’s Golden Melody Awards—the country’s equivalent of the Grammys—are a lot of fun, and you might even discover artists who already feel familiar to Japanese listeners.

Let’s enjoy Taiwanese music together!

Sante?te Kuài Tè

The mysterious breakout female singer-songwriter, Ms.

White.

She uploaded songs in 2019, and “Sleepless Insomnia” and “Santé” drew attention on YouTube and Spotify.

She’s also remixed Sweet John’s “The Me I Left to You” and co-wrote “If It’s Tomorrow” with Yawen Tsao.

It’s said that asking Tower da Funkmasta, director of the indie R&B label ChynaHouse, to handle arrangement and production led to her debut.

She keeps a secretive style, wearing her hat low.

Her work stands out for blending multiple languages, as in “Seh Ah Seh,” and for its richly genre-fluid feel.

Her soulful vocals over laid-back, moody chill sounds are electrifying—perfect for the night.

She seems poised to become a leading force in Asia’s R&B scene, like JouEm Barber.

meteor showerF4

Born from Japan’s hugely popular comic Boys Over Flowers, F4 is a long-standing Taiwanese idol group often compared to SMAP.

This song was the theme for the drama Meteor Garden, which is based on Boys Over Flowers and starred the group’s members.

It’s also a cover of Ken Hirai’s “gaining through losing.” The handsome members’ refreshing harmonies resonate pleasantly.

An alternative band heavily influenced by the Japanese band Number Girl.

They have a unique worldview and are steadily gaining popularity among Japanese music aficionados.

Many Taiwanese and Chinese music videos are elaborate and story-driven, and this song is no exception—it takes the form of a short film featuring a suspicious, monster-like figure.

astronautGo Seihōn (Ū Chinfon)

Wu Qing-feng, the frontman of Taiwan’s refreshingly vibrant band Sodagreen, serves as both lyricist and composer.

He debuted with Sodagreen in 2004, rapidly becoming a popular artist.

During the band’s hiatus from 2017 to 2019, he made his solo debut with the single “Everybody Woohoo.” The following year, his first solo album, “Spaceman” (2019), earned him the Best Male Vocalist award at the 2020 Golden Melody Awards, Taiwan’s equivalent of the Grammys.

He has also written songs for countless famous artists, truly embodying the spirit of a “music craftsman.” With his uniquely transparent voice and superb songwriting sense, Wu Qing-feng’s music seems to convey the very wonder of music itself.

In conclusion

We’ve introduced many Taiwanese artists up to this point.

Have you found a favorite that suits your taste? Many of them are active in Japan as well, which might make them feel more familiar.

There’s something captivating about their accessible sound and beautiful melodies, isn’t there? I’d be happy if you discover a song or an artist that truly resonates with your heart.
