Tchaikovsky, a composer who represents Russia in the 20th century.

This piece is composed in a free form that does not adhere to the traditional concerto structure throughout.

It opens majestically, with the piano striking heavy, bell-like chords.

The playful, rhythmic melody that follows is said to be taken from a folk song heard in Ukraine.

Partway through, the mood shifts dramatically to an emotional melody, after which the piano and orchestra press forward with powerful energy in dialogue.

It is the Overture 1812 composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

Written in 1880 as a concert overture, its title “1812” refers to the year of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia.

In contrast to the brilliant, light strings and woodwinds, the powerful, robust unisons and harmonies of the trumpets that appear throughout make this a strikingly impressive work.

It is known as one of the most famous piano concertos.

Nikolai Rubinstein, the director of the Moscow Conservatory and a friend of the composer, initially dismissed the piece with harsh criticism, but later recognized its true value and performed it frequently in concerts, helping to bring it to public attention.

It begins with a tense fanfare and surges into a weighty second and third movement.

In the final fourth movement, the Russian folk song “The Birch Tree in the Field” is repeated while modulating, after which the opening fanfare from the first movement resounds triumphantly once more.

How about a comical piece to heighten Halloween’s mischievous mood? It’s a work included in the ballet suite The Sleeping Beauty by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, who created many masterpieces of ballet music.

This piece brilliantly depicts, through music, two fairy-tale cats as they frolic and hiss at each other.
