They’re all the kind of pieces that make your face light up and you’ll want to tell someone about!

Funny Commercials [2019] (1–10)

GU “Invincible Knit”

[CM] GU Muteki Knit

What Ayami Nakajo brought to the dry cleaner was GU’s “Muteki Knit”! Kazuya Kojima plays the shop owner who questions the name “Muteki Knit,” but no one will tell him what it means.

The clever touch is that the background music is the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way,” underscoring his comedic protest of “Why won’t you tell me?!”

JR East “JR SKISKI” — 30th Anniversary Commemorative CM for the founding of JR East and the release of “Take Me Out to Snowland”

JR SKISKI: The 1987 film “Take Me Skiing” starring Tomoyo Harada and Hiroshi Mikami revived in a commercial after 30 years

It’s the JR SKISKI series, strongly associated with the image of a beautiful girl gliding swiftly over white snow on skis.

This is a revival of the old series after 30 years, with various lines dubbed over in post.

It’s pretty tongue-in-cheek, so we hope both those who watched back then and first-timers can enjoy this collection of commercials without overthinking it.

KIRIN (Kirin Beverage) KIRIN LEMON (Kirin Lemon) ‘Summer, Those Guys.’ Version

LiSA × Kirin Lemon “Summer, Those Guys.” Full MV

Titled “Kirin Lemon Tribute,” this is one track from a project that collaborated with many artists.

It uses the familiar Kirin Lemon melody, while the chorus melody differs for each artist—making it a pretty unique concept.

This version is by LiSA, a Japanese singer known for numerous anime songs, but it’s also fun to compare the different versions by each artist.

Z-kai ‘Exam Student Support Story’ Crossroad 120 Seconds

Makoto Shinkai’s “Cross Road” — 120-second Entrance Exam Support Story | Z-kai

This is a Z-kai commercial directed by Makoto Shinkai, released in the summer of 2019 when his film Weathering with You hit theaters.

The animation, with its striking use of light, is so beautiful it’s moving on its own.

Set to dramatic music, it portrays a boy and a girl studying for exams, making you feel as if you’re watching a short film.

It’s only two minutes long, but it’s a powerful piece packed with Makoto Shinkai’s distinctive touch.

Gundam × EneKey Collaboration CM, Second Installment: “You used CP, didn’t you!” Edition

Amuro: “You paid.” Bright: “What’s wrong with paying?!” Iconic Gundam lines revived in a commercial: Gundam × EneKey collaboration CM Part 2 — “You paid for CP!” edition

The commercial for EneKey, which lets you pay for gas without taking out any cash at ENEOS self-service stations, has made an unexpected collaboration with the hugely popular anime Gundam! I couldn’t help but laugh at the exchange—“You paid,” “What’s wrong with paying?”—a playful twist on the famous back-and-forth between Amuro and Bright Noa.

Benesse Shinken Zemi High School Course “Turnover” Version

[Anime CM] Benesse Shinkenzemi High School Course 'Turnover' STUDIO4°C

What is this story set to The Pillows’ classic song “Funny Bunny”? It’s not just that your grades will definitely improve once you start it—your sports performance will get better, your weak math skills will rise, and you’ll find yourself getting closer to your dreams.

Yes, it’s the dream-like cram course everyone knows: the Shinken Zemi TV commercial.

It brings back those youthful memories of reading only the manga in the Shinken Zemi direct-mail flyers.

Recruit Townwork “Coffee Shop” Version

Rina Ikoma becomes a café clerk in a commercial, teaming up with Hitoshi Matsumoto to tackle a “complex order” in Townwork’s new TV commercial, Coffee Shop edition.

The Downtown Hitoshi Matsumoto “If you’re going to get a part-time job, use Townwork” commercial series.

They’re sketch-like ads with lots of jokes, but the tough behind-the-scenes vibe and Matsumoto’s ad-libs are really entertaining.

You can see the professional spirit of Hitoshi Matsumoto and Rina Ikoma, who appear in them.
