Speaking of the Okinawa Actors School, it’s famous as the alma mater of many artists, including Namie Amuro, and she made her debut as a member of its first class.

This song was released in 1991, and her slightly husky yet soaring vocals paired with sharp dance moves made her popular, didn’t they? She is currently active under the name Miyorogi Ginko.

She is Okinawa’s first anisong singer-artist, born to a British father and Japanese mother.

She made her indie debut in 2008, shooting up to No.

2 on the iTunes overall album chart.

She then made her major-label debut the same year with the single “PROMiSE.” This song is also the opening theme for the anime “Akane Sasu Shōjo.” Although she is an anisong singer, her soulful vocals are the secret to her popularity.

Rimi Natsukawa, whose appealing voice is glossy and full of breadth, began winning awards in nationwide amateur singing contests around the age of nine.

She debuted as an enka singer in 1989 but did not find success, and re-debuted in 1999 under her current name.

She became known nationwide with the hit song Nada Sōsō.

Released for streaming in June 2019 and used as the ending theme for the Okinawan tokusatsu drama Togyū Senshi Waidoh 2, this song is a heartwarming ballad.

GOLD RUSH, known as a J-POP duo representing Okinawa’s music scene, is a two-member unit consisting of Kota and Usekay.

Discovered by producer Seiji Kameda, they made their major debut in September 2012.

Their songs, which blend refreshing melodies with a pop sound, were featured one after another in TV shows and commercials, drawing attention.

In 2011, they won the “au Okinawa Music★Grand Prix 2011,” proving their talent in their home region of Okinawa.

Although they disbanded in December 2014 after releasing the album “We are the RUSH,” they remain in many fans’ memories as a unit that showcased new possibilities for pop music from Okinawa.

They’re highly recommended for music fans seeking a fresh fusion of J-POP and Okinawan music.

DIAMANTES is a Latin band with the unique background of having emerged from a live music venue in Okinawa City.

Since their formation in 1991, they have established a genre known as “Okinawa Latina,” a brilliant fusion of Latin music and Okinawan traditional music.

Their 1993 album OKINAWA LATINA became explosively popular in Okinawa and led to their major-label debut.

Centered around Alberto Shiroma, a third-generation Japanese Peruvian, they have produced a string of captivating songs, including tunes for Orion Beer commercials, and won the Grand Prix at the first Manila World Music Festival hosted by the Philippine government.

They continue to serve as a bridge connecting the music of Okinawa with the world.

With her beautiful, powerful voice, Manami evokes the breeze of Okinawa.

Hailing from Okinawa herself, she’s an artist whose songs and music videos are steeped in the spirit of the islands.

Remarkably, she was discovered by the world-renowned music producer Pharrell Williams—a testament to her talent.

She was selected to sing the commercial song for Orion Beer, a major brand in Okinawa, and she also writes lyrics for many artists.

A versatile and rising star, she’s a female artist to keep a close eye on.

Smile~ You are not alone ~shiori

Released in 2012, “Smile ~You’re Not Alone~” was used as the theme song for Studio Alice’s TV commercial.

The song was also arranged for chorus, and an initiative called “Hana no Shiori” was launched, in which she visited schools across the country to collaborate with students.

She is an artist whose music is frequently heard, with songs like “A Five-Letter Word” featured in commercials for the Life Insurance Association.

While her original songs do not prominently foreground Okinawan elements, her CDs do include tracks such as the Okinawan folk song “Tinsagu nu Hana.”
