Rimi Natsukawa, whose appealing voice is glossy and full of breadth, began winning awards in nationwide amateur singing contests around the age of nine.
She debuted as an enka singer in 1989 but did not find success, and re-debuted in 1999 under her current name.
She became known nationwide with the hit song Nada Sōsō.
Released for streaming in June 2019 and used as the ending theme for the Okinawan tokusatsu drama Togyū Senshi Waidoh 2, this song is a heartwarming ballad.
Dynamic RyukyuChuning Candy

Chuning Candy is a girls’ dance unit formed in Okinawa.
Their name is often abbreviated as “Chunikyan.” The group was formed with an average age of 17, and features a strong international flavor with members from Okinawa and the United States.
Originally a seven-member group, after some departures and additions they are now active nationwide as a five-member group.

With her beautiful, powerful voice, Manami evokes the breeze of Okinawa.
Hailing from Okinawa herself, she’s an artist whose songs and music videos are steeped in the spirit of the islands.
Remarkably, she was discovered by the world-renowned music producer Pharrell Williams—a testament to her talent.
She was selected to sing the commercial song for Orion Beer, a major brand in Okinawa, and she also writes lyrics for many artists.
A versatile and rising star, she’s a female artist to keep a close eye on.
Bubbly GirlGWINKO

Speaking of the Okinawa Actors School, it’s famous as the alma mater of many artists, including Namie Amuro, and she made her debut as a member of its first class.
This song was released in 1991, and her slightly husky yet soaring vocals paired with sharp dance moves made her popular, didn’t they? She is currently active under the name Miyorogi Ginko.

She is Okinawa’s first anisong singer-artist, born to a British father and Japanese mother.
She made her indie debut in 2008, shooting up to No.
2 on the iTunes overall album chart.
She then made her major-label debut the same year with the single “PROMiSE.” This song is also the opening theme for the anime “Akane Sasu Shōjo.” Although she is an anisong singer, her soulful vocals are the secret to her popularity.

DIAMANTES is a Latin band with the unique background of having emerged from a live music venue in Okinawa City.
Since their formation in 1991, they have established a genre known as “Okinawa Latina,” a brilliant fusion of Latin music and Okinawan traditional music.
Their 1993 album OKINAWA LATINA became explosively popular in Okinawa and led to their major-label debut.
Centered around Alberto Shiroma, a third-generation Japanese Peruvian, they have produced a string of captivating songs, including tunes for Orion Beer commercials, and won the Grand Prix at the first Manila World Music Festival hosted by the Philippine government.
They continue to serve as a bridge connecting the music of Okinawa with the world.

FlowerKina Shōkichi & Chanpurūzu

Shoukichi Kina & Champloose have led the music scene out of Okinawa with their unique sound that fuses Okinawan folk music and contemporary music.
Since their debut in 1972, they have captivated many with an innovative style that weaves together Okinawan traditional music and rock.
They made their nationwide debut with the album “Shoukichi Kina & Champloose,” appeared on NHK’s Kōhaku Uta Gassen in 1991, and won the inaugural Endo Minoru Kayō Music Grand Prize in 1995.
Their international activities have included a 1994 performance at Beijing’s Forbidden City and a four-city North American tour with Ry Cooder.
Rooted in Okinawa’s culture and history yet delivering a universal message, their sound makes this a perfect pick for music fans interested in traditional and world music.
