FlowerKina Shōkichi & Chanpurūzu

Shoukichi Kina & Champloose have led the music scene out of Okinawa with their unique sound that fuses Okinawan folk music and contemporary music.

Since their debut in 1972, they have captivated many with an innovative style that weaves together Okinawan traditional music and rock.

They made their nationwide debut with the album “Shoukichi Kina & Champloose,” appeared on NHK’s Kōhaku Uta Gassen in 1991, and won the inaugural Endo Minoru Kayō Music Grand Prize in 1995.

Their international activities have included a 1994 performance at Beijing’s Forbidden City and a four-city North American tour with Ry Cooder.

Rooted in Okinawa’s culture and history yet delivering a universal message, their sound makes this a perfect pick for music fans interested in traditional and world music.

Formed in 2007 in Okinawa Prefecture, the three-piece girls’ rock band STEREOPONY made their major debut in 2008 after winning the Grand Prix at the Young People’s Music Festival.

The members—AIMI, NOHANA, and SHIHO—drew attention for their pop-rock sound, blending catchy melodies with powerful performances.

They produced numerous anime theme songs, with the opening themes for Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and Darker than Black garnering especially strong responses.

In 2009, they performed at SXSW in the United States, gaining international recognition.

With their energetic performances and melodious tracks, they have captivated not only rock fans but a wide range of music listeners.

A four-woman folk group that carries on Okinawa’s traditional music while continually exploring new forms of expression.

Active since 2014, Unaigumi features Misako Koja, Namiko Miyazato, and Yukino Hiyane—members of the original Nenes—joined by Emiko Shimabukuro, and they released the album Unaijima.

Produced by Kazuya Sahara, the work seamlessly blends string arrangements with the quartet’s harmonies.

In 2015, they also collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto and donated part of the proceeds to the Henoko Fund, using their musical activities to share a message of peace.

Conveying Okinawa’s beautiful nature, history, and people’s emotions through powerful, crystalline vocals, their music is recommended for anyone interested in experiencing traditional sounds.

Kiyama Shoten, named after a mom-and-pop candy store in Ishigaki Island, is a distinctive entertainment band formed by three relatives.

Since their formation in 2008, they have continued to captivate audiences with a unique sound that superbly blends Okinawan traditional music with pop, rock, and reggae.

From their self-titled album Kiyama Shoten to the best-of collection Kiyama Shoten The Best ~Kono Uta Todoke~, they have released numerous works, and in 2023 they also took part in a Kome Kome Club tribute album.

Their live shows fire up venues with tightly synced performances and skillful banter, earning high praise both in Japan and abroad.

Deluxe x Deluxe is bringing a fresh breeze to Okinawa’s music scene.

This seven-member rock band—four in the instrument squad and three in the performance squad—captivates with a unique style that fuses Showa-era kayōkyoku with J-pop.

Formed in May 2016 by college classmates, they launched an energetic live career based in Okinawa.

The bonds nurtured through their shared house life as a group shine through in their stage performances.

Starting with the single “How Shameless to Compare a Woman to the Moon,” they welcomed MEG, formerly of HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR, as their sound producer, marking a new step forward.

In 2023, they moved their base of operations to Tokyo, and their sound—blending nostalgia and freshness—continues to captivate music fans across generations.

Nenes are known for their musical style that modernizes traditional Okinawan folk songs.

The four-woman group, formed in 1990 under the production of Sadao China, made their major-label debut in 1992 with the album “Yunta.” Their distinctive sound, which fuses traditional instruments centered on the sanshin with contemporary arrangements, has earned support from a wide audience.

In 1994, they successfully completed a European tour and a New York performance, bringing the appeal of Okinawan music to the world.

At the 2000 Kyushu–Okinawa Summit, they also took part in the “Island Songs of the World” performances in Russia, France, and Italy.

In 2021, they released the album “Gajumaru,” and they continue to captivate listeners with powerful vocals that strongly reflect the climate and culture of Okinawa.

They are a highly recommended group for anyone interested in exploring Okinawan music.

Yuko Narusoko is a singer-songwriter with a unique background: she received rigorous training in classical piano and vocal performance and once aspired to be an opera singer.

After experiencing setbacks in Italy, she made her major-label debut with King Records in November 2010.

She has drawn attention for her clear, soaring voice and her distinctive musical style that fuses Okinawan traditional music with classical elements.

In 2007, actor Hisaya Morishige praised her as a “miracle diva entrusted to the next generation,” and she continues to perform energetically across Japan, including dinner shows nationwide.
