Bands, artists, and singers from Okinawa Prefecture

When you hear “an artist from Okinawa,” who comes to mind?

Okinawa Prefecture has produced a wealth of captivating artists: the national songstress Namie Amuro, dance-vocal groups like MAX and DA PUMP, and even rock bands such as HY and ORANGE RANGE.

In this article, we’ll introduce not only these artists and other Okinawan classics, but also a lineup of slightly unexpected names that might make you say, “Wait, they’re from Okinawa too?!”

From the fusion of dance and vocals to mixture rock, and songs that incorporate Ryukyuan scales, these artists are brimming with the unique charm only Okinawa can offer.

Decorationozu

This is the rock band Oz from Okinawa.

They originally performed as a four-piece, but from 2013 they continued as a trio and disbanded in 2015.

They were known for their clear, high-range, pop-leaning vocals—especially the strong impression left by NARUMI.

Although they’re from Okinawa, they developed an original sound that was completely different from traditional Okinawan music.

They provided the theme song for Okinawa Prefecture’s public relations program “Umanchu Hiroba” and also had tie-ins with TV Saitama programs.

I really hope they reunite someday.

HeidiZUKAN

We are ZUKAN, the Happiness Band formed by close friends from Okinawa Prefectural Ginoza High School.

We love our hometown dearly, and for our major debut single “Heidi,” we made a music video in our hometown of Kin Town together with local children.

As local heroes, we’re spreading energy from our community to Okinawa and all across Japan.

It’s okayji ma ma

Ji Ma Ma is known for songs that gently soothe the heart.

The group was formed in Kyoto in 2001 by Terumi Miyahira from Okinawa and Mao Nakajima from Kyoto.

They made their major debut in 2004 with the single “Machi” (Town), but Nakajima left the group the same year.

Since then, Miyahira has continued Ji Ma Ma as a solo project, moving her base of activities to her hometown of Okinawa.

Their 2009 release “Daijoubu” (It’s Okay) was featured in a segment of the Kansai-based TV program “Chichin Puipui.” Later, together with various artists whose songs had also been introduced in the same segment, she participated in an album release as part of the “Oishii Uta Family.”

BRAND NEW WORLDD-51

D-51 is a vocal duo made up of YASU and YU.

Their name comes from the steam locomotive that once raced across Japan, and the duo’s innocent, soaring vocals are incredibly appealing.

Many people probably remember NO MORE CRY, which became the theme song for the hit TV drama Gokusen.

They’ve delivered warm tracks like the medium-tempo ballad Hibiscus and BRAND NEW WORLD, which served as the opening theme for One Piece.

Listening to D-51 leaves you feeling refreshed, so I highly recommend them!

In conclusion

We introduced a whole lineup of artists from Okinawa.

Of course, there are songs that feature the distinctly Okinawan Ryukyu scale, but there are also plenty of rock bands and dance-focused artists.
