Brahms's masterpieces. Popular classical music.

Here are some recommended works from the many masterpieces left by the German composer Johannes Brahms.

If you get to know Brahms—hailed as one of the “Three Bs” of German music alongside Bach and Beethoven—you’ll be well on your way to becoming a classical music connoisseur.

His Symphony No.

1, composed with deep respect for Beethoven, was so strongly influenced by him that the conductor of its premiere, Hans von Bülow, famously called it “Beethoven’s Tenth Symphony.”

Please enjoy the world of Brahms, which continues to be cherished by classical music fans today.

Brahms' LullabyJohannes Brahms

This is an art song composed by Johannes Brahms and regarded as one of the “world’s three greatest lullabies.” There is even a report of an experiment in which 85% of crying babies stopped crying after listening to this piece! For busy moms troubled by their adorable child’s nighttime crying—who, once fussy, often won’t settle down—this might be a lifesaving track.

Waltz No. 15, Op. 39-15 “Waltz of Love”Johannes Brahms

The German composer Johannes Brahms is one of the towering figures of Romantic music.

While honoring the formal beauty of classicism, his music overflows with Romantic expressiveness.

Among the gems he left us, the set of piano miniatures “16 Waltzes” includes the Waltz in A major, widely cherished under the nickname “Waltz of Love,” a celebrated piano masterpiece.

Noted for its beautiful melody, this piece creates an atmosphere of gentle joy and tranquility, and is beloved not only by piano students and performers but is also frequently used in commercials, films, and television dramas.

Characterized by its graceful and sweet melody, this piece is a work for piano four hands composed by Johannes Brahms in 1865.

Though simple, it carries deep emotion and is beloved not only by classical music fans but by many people.

Condensing the weightiness and meticulous aesthetic sensibility so typical of Brahms, it is frequently used in films and television commercials, and is also popular as background music for weddings and receptions.

Since it is performed in various arrangements, feel free to choose a version that suits the occasion.

Waltz No. 3, Op. 39-3Johannes Brahms

Composed in 1865 by Johannes Brahms, a leading figure of the Romantic era, the Sixteen Waltzes include this piece, a brief yet captivating work in G-sharp minor.

Inspired by the tradition of Viennese social dance, it is regarded as one of the most emotionally rich and refined pieces in Brahms’s waltz collection.

Originally written for piano four hands, it was later arranged for solo piano.

While preserving classical formal beauty, it embodies Brahms’s signature style, interweaving romantic expression.

If you’re looking to take on a waltz, why not start with this piece?

Waltz No. 9, Op. 39-9Johannes Brahms

J. Brahms – Waltzer in d-Moll – Op. 39 / Nr. 9 – Piano (Steinway – HD)
Waltz No. 9, Op. 39-9Johannes Brahms

Among Brahms’s collections of waltzes, a piece I especially recommend is Waltz No.

9, Op.

39-9.

These waltzes were originally written for piano four hands, so the solo versions can be awkward to play; however, Brahms himself also published a simplified arrangement.

The phrasing allows both the right and left hands to take their time and prepare for what comes next, making it relatively approachable.

If you find the left-hand leaps challenging, try practicing each hand separately.

Waltz No. 15, Op. 39-15Johannes Brahms

Brahms: Waltz No. 15 in A-flat major, Op. 39 No. 15
Waltz No. 15, Op. 39-15Johannes Brahms

The 15th piece from the “16 Waltzes, Op.

39,” originally written for piano four hands and later arranged for solo piano.

The work was dedicated to the aesthetician and music critic Eduard Hanslick, who was reportedly surprised that Brahms—an advocate of absolute music—would write waltzes, which were then considered entertainment music.

It is thought that Brahms, impressed by the popular waltzes of Johann Strauss at the time, was inspired by Strauss when composing these pieces.

Rather than an optimistic and merry waltz, this piece reflects Brahms’s temperament in its somewhat solemn and weighty atmosphere.

Violin Sonata No. 1 “Rain Song”Johannes Brahms

Brahms – Sonata No.1 G Major – Vivace ma non troppo part I
Violin Sonata No. 1 “Rain Song”Johannes Brahms

This work was completed in the summer of 1879, half a year after the death of Felix, the youngest child of the Schumann couple and a poet, who passed away at the young age of 25.

Also known by the subtitle “Rain Song,” this Violin Sonata No.

1 was written when Brahms was 46 years old, and it is said to embody his feelings for Felix.
