Fun brain-activating exercises to the rhythm of stepping

If you want to enjoy brain-activating exercises with a marching rhythm, ball exercises are recommended.
First, repeatedly extend the ball forward with one hand while lifting the opposite leg, alternating sides.
Once you get used to it, change the direction from forward to upward, coordinating your hands and feet in the same way.
Finally, match the rhythm by extending the hand opposite the lifted leg forward, forward, up, up—two times each.
This exercise requires changes in tempo and hand-foot coordination, providing strong stimulation to the brain and helping maintain concentration and reflexes.
It can be done while seated, making it easy for older adults to adopt, and it’s convenient to start with just a single ball from a 100-yen shop.
The Itomaki (Spool Winding) Song Using Rubber Bands

This exercise aims to make finger movements smoother by stretching a rubber band with both hands and moving it from finger to finger.
Maintaining strength is important to keep the band well stretched, so sustaining effort while moving adds complexity that also helps stimulate the brain.
If you coordinate the movement of shifting the rubber band with a song—such as the children’s song “Ito Maki”—and proceed rhythmically, it will further improve smoothness.
We also recommend starting with patterns that move the band to the same finger on both hands, then gradually shifting the positions to make the patterns more complex over time.
Kusudama Cube

Making a cube-shaped kusudama with origami is a delightful idea that’s perfect for recreational activities with older adults.
You create many origami units and interlock them like weaving to complete the cube kusudama.
Because it involves fine hand movements and sustained focus, it can help maintain and even improve cognitive function.
The colorful, eye-catching result is also appealing as a decoration after it’s finished.
It’s beginner-friendly, encourages teamwork and conversation, and is an excellent activity for enjoying a relaxed, friendly time together.
Color Game

How about a color game as a whiteboard activity? For this game, prepare papers with color words written on them.
The key is to make the kanji different from the actual color of the text.
Instead of reading the words on the papers attached to the whiteboard, ask the participating seniors to say the color of the letters.
It may seem easy, but it actually trips people up and often leads to lots of laughs.
Because you see with your eyes and think with your head, it’s effective for reflexes and brain training.
Start by letting them answer slowly and thoughtfully, then gradually pick up the pace.
Moshikame Goo-Paa Hand Play

Let’s do the open-and-close hand exercise along with the children’s song “The Hare and the Tortoise.” When you make a fist, move your thumbs either outside or tucked inside.
Doing it while singing is expected to further stimulate brain activity.
Match the movements to the lyrics: have both thumbs move the same way, or have each thumb move differently.
As you might guess, making them move differently is more challenging.
Once you get used to the thumb movements, give it a try.
It’s said that tasks that feel a bit harder than your usual movements are more effective at activating the brain.

Finger rotation exercise

Let me introduce a finger-rotation exercise where you touch the same fingers of both hands together and rotate them.
This exercise was devised by an internist, and it’s said to help improve cognitive function, speed-reading ability, and calculation skills.
Amazingly, more than a third of the cerebrum is devoted to moving and controlling the hands and fingers.
So simply moving your fingers stimulates and activates the brain.
Since you’ll be moving your fingers, it might help to gently massage the bases of your fingers before you start.
The motion is simple—just twirling your fingers—so it seems easy to fit into small pockets of time.
OK finger exercise

Consciously moving your fingers helps activate the brain, improve circulation, and support smoother daily life.
This simple exercise strengthens and improves finger movement by intentionally engaging your fingers.
You’ll alternately perform a clenching-and-opening motion and a wrist-twisting motion, while also checking that you’re moving properly.
It’s also recommended to do the same with your toes, not just your hands, to help promote circulation throughout your entire body.
