[For Seniors] Let’s Start a Fun Craft Activity
In elderly care facilities and day service centers, craft-based recreation is essential.
Because it involves fine motor movements, it helps with rehabilitation and stimulates the brain.
In this article, we’ve gathered easy and enjoyable craft ideas that older adults can make with minimal effort.
Even those who have never done crafts and lack confidence will find it easy to get started.
Most materials are things you already have at home or can quickly pick up at a dollar store.

[For Seniors] Let’s Start Fun Craft Activities (341–350)
balloon

Many of you likely remember playing with paper balloons when you were children.
These simple balloons, easily made with origami, evoke nostalgia and bring excitement to older adults.
Because the steps are very simple, they’re perfect for seniors to fold while having fun! Finish by blowing air into it to shape it, and the balloon is complete.
Folding the paper balloon helps train fine motor skills, and batting the balloon with the hands provides stimulation.
It’s also recommended for recreational activities in senior care facilities, so be sure to give it a try!
A basket woven from hemp twine

Compared to a while ago, 100-yen shops have increased.
From handy gadgets and clever items to relaxing goods, you can’t help but reach out and end up buying things you don’t even need.
So here’s a lovely mini basket made from materials sold at 100-yen shops: paper cups and jute twine.
To make it, just cut the paper cup into strips and weave the jute twine through them.
If you’re an older person who enjoys knitting, you’ll probably breeze through the steps.
It does involve detailed work, so it can take quite a bit of time.
You might enjoy splitting it up over several days and working on it at your own pace.
a flower wreath

Let’s make a floral wreath to brighten up your room.
You can get all the materials at a 100-yen shop.
All you need is a styrofoam wreath, bamboo skewers, and fabric cut into 5 cm squares.
Choose any colors of fabric you like.
You simply insert the fabric into the wreath, so it’s easy for seniors to make, too.
By using your favorite colors, you can create a wreath full of your own originality.
It’s also recommended as a gift for someone special.
butterfly
Here’s an easy “butterfly” craft you can prepare quickly with just a few simple steps.
First, prepare three sheets of origami paper: two for the wings and one for the body.
On the two sheets for the wings, draw lines freely with colored pencils.
This will make the finished piece much more vibrant.
After drawing the lines, fold the origami paper into an accordion, then fold it into a V shape.
Next, cut the remaining sheet into the shape of a butterfly’s body.
Attach the wings to the body symmetrically, and you’re done.
If you make butterflies in various colors and display them, they can become a fantastical wall decoration.
Because this craft uses fine motor skills, it also provides good stimulation for the brain and is recommended as a recreational activity in senior facilities.
A spinning top made from a milk carton

Making spinning tops out of milk cartons sounds so cute and fun.
It’s lovely to come up with original designs while working with your hands.
It’s great that older adults can create freely at their own pace, too.
Using the finished tops to hold a spinning-top contest together sounds exciting.
It’ll probably bring back memories and a sense of nostalgia.
I’m looking forward to seeing the wonderful creations the seniors will make.
Making them together should give everyone a time full of smiles.
flute
Many seniors probably enjoyed playing the flute when they were children.
Let’s reminisce about those memories and make a flute out of a straw this time.
All you need is a straw and a pair of scissors.
By simply cutting into the straw, you can easily make a flute.
You’ll cut the tip into a triangle, but be careful to make both sides the same height, or it won’t produce sound properly.
Once it’s done, try blowing hard to make a sound.
Making sounds like this can also help improve lung capacity for seniors.
Simple gradient-style

This activity uses water-based pens and a spray bottle to create soft gradients on a card.
Place a plastic bag over the card and, using the visible outline of the card as a guide, freely draw patterns on the bag with water-based pens.
When you’re done, spray water to let the ink bleed, then flip the bag over to transfer the ink onto the card.
Let it dry to finish.
Try various colors to create your own gradients.
When a name is written on a card with a beautiful gradient, it may also convey the person’s gentle character.
