Erykah Badu’s classic “Green Eyes.” She’s known as a leading artist of neo-soul—a genre that blends soul music with funk, hip-hop, jazz, and more—but this track is a neo-soul piece that brings its jazz elements to the forefront.

Its relaxed rhythm pairs exceptionally well with the graceful movements of figure skating.

Oboe ConcertoAressandoro Marucchero

It is a representative work by Alessandro Marcello, composed in the 1700s.

Because Shoma Uno uses this piece for his short program, it’s likely well-known among figure skating fans.

It’s a concerto that conveys both brilliance and intensity, and you can’t help but be captivated by Uno’s dynamic yet elegant skating on the ice.

He also performed his short program to this music at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

This is “Pump It” by the American hip-hop/mixture group The Black Eyed Peas.

The short program “The Phoenix” was Daisuke Takahashi’s final performance as a singles skater.

The song is a signature track by the American rock band Fall Out Boy, featured on their fifth album, which marked their return after a four-year hiatus.

A phoenix is a mythical bird of rebirth, and the song symbolizes the band’s own comeback.

Its lyrics express a “break with the past” and “a new beginning,” and Takahashi’s performance amplifies that message even further.

Battle of DestinyJohn Williams

Since 2014, pop music has also been permitted for figure skating programs, but it still feels like classical music predominates, image-wise.

Even those who aren’t very interested in classical music often find themselves suddenly captivated when a familiar piece or a pop song comes on.

Many of you have probably heard the piece Duel of the Fates.

It’s one of the famous tracks from the movie Star Wars.

At the 2022 Beijing Olympics, France’s Adam Siao Him Fa used a remix of this piece together with the well-known Darth Vader theme, The Imperial March, for his short program.

The tense atmosphere that plays during battle scenes—those edge-of-your-seat moments—really makes your palms sweat, doesn’t it?

The Battle DrumsHisaishi Joe

Composed solely of percussion, the lively yet powerful piece “The Battle Drums” lives up to its Japanese title, “Tatakai no Taiko.” It’s a track from the Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke.

Latvian figure skater Deniss Vasiļjevs used it during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, captivating many with its valiant atmosphere.

Given Deniss’s fondness for Japan, the choice makes perfect sense.

Still… who knew a drums-only piece could be this cool? Joe Hisaishi truly is remarkable.
