Classic and Famous One-Shot Gag Collection (11–20)

PPAPPikotaro

PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen Official) “Long” ver. Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen ‘Long’ Version / PIKOTARO
PPAP Piko-Taro

There was even a time when, if you asked comedians, “Who’s the funniest comedian right now?” almost all of them would answer, “Kosaka Daimao!” That very Kosaka Daimao made a timeless comeback as Piko-Taro.

His PPAP bit sparked a worldwide craze.

Skillfully linking the words pen, apple, and pineapple to a catchy rhythm and crafting an addictive melody that makes you think, “I want to sing it too!”—that’s classic Kosaka.

Since so many people know it, singing it together in class would definitely get everyone hyped.

Just be careful not to get so excited that the teacher scolds you!

AiinKen Shimura

Ken Shimura would be shocked: Rola shows off a Hollywood-style “Aiin” in CHINTAI’s new commercial, “Hey, Simu”
Aiin Ken Shimura

It’s a simple bit where you jut out your chin, bend your elbows, and say “Aiiin”—a classic gag by Ken Shimura that everyone knows.

Because it’s such a short phrase, it actually packs a bigger punch.

There’s no point overthinking it, but I still don’t really understand the meaning… nonetheless, I recommend it as a joke that works for anyone!

tsukkomi (the ‘straight man’ retort in Japanese comedy)Soshina from Shimofuri Myojo

The 1st Championship to Draw Tsukkomi from Soshina (You’ll get a voice message back from Soshina in Instagram DMs)
tsukkomi (the 'straight man' retort in Japanese comedy) Shimofuri Myojo Sosina

Shimofuri Myojo have become a hot topic through M-1 and R-1, and you can see them everywhere—commercials, variety shows, and more.

The tsukkomi specialist, Soshina, really leaves an impression, doesn’t he? With his distinctive pose and raspy voice, his sharp retorts are guaranteed to land.

Strictly speaking, he’s a tsukkomi, so it’s different from a one-shot gag, but turning that on its head and delivering a joke using Soshina’s tsukkomi pose and voice could be pretty funny, too.

That doesn’t matter!Yoshio Kojima

Announcement!? Who cares about that! We’re doing the Kojima Yoshio-style performance again this year!
That doesn't matter! Yoshio Kojima

A gag by comedian Yoshio Kojima.

Right after telling a negative story, he dances and says, “Sonna no kankei nee!” (“That doesn’t matter!”).

His signature phrase “Oppapii” is catchy, too.

For “Sonna no kankei nee!” go all out with big, powerful movements, and for “Oppapii” keep it loose—adding that contrast in tempo will hype up the crowd even more!

Atarimae TaisoCOWCOW

COWCOW “Atarimae Taiso #1”
Atarimae TaisoCOWCOW

COWCOW’s “Atarimae Taisō” routine, which once had all of Japan in stitches, might have come full circle and become the funniest bit right now.

Pick a close friend in your class as your partner and try performing “Atarimae Taisō.” It’s fascinating how just singing obvious phenomena and events to a rhythm—like “If you put out your right foot and then your left, you can move forward,” or “If you suddenly slap someone’s cheek, they’ll get mad”—becomes hilarious! By the way, COWCOW are contemporaries of London Boots No.1 No.2 and Gussan from DonDokoDon.

With their long years in comedy fueling the ultimate rhythm-based routine, be sure to copy it perfectly!

Wh-aaat!? You really went and did it!Coolpoko

In the comedy duo Coolpoko’s gag, they pound mochi while riffing on everyday scenes.

First off, their look makes a real impact, right? And their signature line, “Whaaat!? You really went and did it!” has an addictive kind of humor, doesn’t it? How about trying it with some relatable everyday ‘that’s so true’ situations?

Go ahead, please.Dachou Club

Dachou Club: “Please, after you”—a compilation
Go ahead, please. Dachou Club

It’s one of the signature gags of the comedy trio Dachou Club, who have many gags.

When something nobody wants to do—like a punishment game—appears, one person boldly volunteers first, then others follow suit.

Pushed along by the group’s momentum, at the moment the last person volunteers, everyone yields the turn to that person—That’s the punchline.

The key to making it exciting is having three or more people to create the flow: the one who leads, the ones who follow, and the one who ends up having to do it.

Expressions and reactions are crucial too—like reluctantly volunteering or getting mad when it’s foisted on you.

La la la laiFujisaki Market

“Rararai Exercises” return after 4 years! Fujisaki Market: “We’ll show you how rhythm gags are done by the veterans!” at “Japan Girls Expo 2015 Spring” #FujisakiMarket
La la la lai Fujisaki Market

This is “La La La Rai Exercise” by the comedy duo Fujisaki Market, often called pioneers of rhythm-based comedy.

It’s a long-loved gag, so people of all ages—from children to adults—can enjoy it, which explains its popularity.

From the dance choreography to the pacing of the lines, you could say it’s an almost perfect gag.

Kai~noKanpei Kazama

Natsume Mito and Kanpei Hazama perform “Kai~no~” — Poké Muhi new collaboration campaign & collaborative song unveiling PR event 3
Kanpei Kazama of Kai~no

It’s great to perform a joke everyone knows, right? So I’d like to introduce Kanpei Hazama’s signature gag, “Kaii-no.” The way to do it is very simple: rub your butt against something nearby while repeating “kaii-no.” It’s easier to get if you watch the original, but try tightening your throat a little and saying it in a cute voice.

By the way, this gag is simple and highly versatile, so you can slip it in during conversation transitions and the like.

Classic and Famous One-Shot Gag Compilation (21–30)

It doesn’t matter.Hōsei Tsukitei

It’s got nothing to do with Kunimasa Yamazaki~
It doesn't matter. Hōsei Tsukitei

In the variety show Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!!, during the segment “Gaki no Tsukai Court,” the gag by Hōsei Tsukitei—‘It’s got nothing to do with it’—was put on trial for its legitimacy.

The case centered on claims that this gag closely resembled another, but once the lid was lifted, it turned out the idea had actually been pulled from two different bits.

If you ever find yourself suspected of something in a conversation with friends, why not bust out this one-shot gag and turn it into a laugh? Just be careful—if the other person is serious, it might put a crack in your friendship.
