kissTajima Takao (ORIGINAL LOVE)

Once you hear the singing voice of ORIGINAL LOVE’s vocalist, Takao Tajima, you’ll feel a striking individuality that grabs your heart and never lets go.
Many fans are captivated by his masculine, wild yet sweet voice.
The occasional ad-lib he slips in is also truly wonderful.
MephistoAvu-chan (Jouou Bachi)

Up until now, Queen Bee had hardly appeared in the media, but after their 2023 smash hit Mephisto, the ending theme for Oshi no Ko, they’ve been showing up on TV much more often.
Avu-chan, whose gender, age, real name, and many other details remain private, has a mysterious presence that’s part of the appeal.
With crystalline high notes, ground-crawling lows, a lustrous midrange, and an overwhelming vocal range, Avu-chan is an exceptional singer.
Even on Queen Bee’s official channels, they’re introduced as a distinctive vocalist who skillfully switches between high and low registers.
Their worldbuilding is incredible, and they’re a genius who self-produces everything from the music to the visuals.
When you see Queen Bee, you’ll find yourself pulled right in!
You’re the Only…Ono Masatoshi

A top-tier Japanese vocalist who captivates with a four-octave range and powerful high notes.
Their balance of vocal power and technique—spanning from ballads to metal—is stunning, and they’re a true professional whose prowess hasn’t faded even after more than 30 years of singing! Masatoshi Ono’s high notes aren’t just high; they’re thick and strong, with enough presence to stand out even in the metal band GALNERYUS.
He’s also active as a vocal instructor, and as is the case for me as well, teaching others further refines one’s own skills—while still performing actively.
In any case, his vocal production remains remarkably stable to this day!
spring rainMurashita Kōzō

Kozo Murashita is a folk singer whose quiet voice moves the heart.
His song “Hatsukoi” (First Love) is very famous.
It’s said that because his family ran a movie theater and he was exposed to film scores and popular songs from an early age, his melodic sense and emotional expression were honed.
Of course, his singing is wonderful, but above all I’m drawn to the beauty of the Japanese in his lyrics.
Without flashy staging, he was the type to captivate an audience with just a guitar—an authentic singer-songwriter who can rely solely on his voice and melodies.
If you like folk music, be sure to explore his work.
Love MemoryMatsuzaki Shigeru

This was Shigeru Matsuzaki’s 14th single in total, released on August 10, 1977.
Unlike today, when technologies like pitch correction help make vocals sound better, many singers active in the 1970s and 1980s had exceptionally strong vocal abilities.
Among them, Shigeru Matsuzaki in particular is a singer who delivers wonderful performances, from the sheer power of his voice when he sings at full throttle to the nuanced expressiveness when he sings softly.
It’s also remarkable that even after his peak years in the 1970s, his vocal skill and power have shown no signs of decline.
Speaking as a vocal coach and from what I hear with my own ears, I think Matsuzaki’s vocal production is truly outstanding.
MonicaYoshikawa Koji

Kōji Kikkawa’s debut single, released on February 1, 1984.
As expected of a singer active since the ’80s, his vocal ability is truly outstanding.
Kikkawa also has quite an idiosyncratic singing style, but I feel his fundamentals and vocal projection are undeniably solid.
The song I’m introducing here, “Monica,” drew a lot of attention at the time of its release and achieved strong sales, but personally, I think his vocal style went on to significantly influence later visual-kei vocalists.
It might be interesting to listen with that J-POP/J-ROCK timeline in mind.
Islanders’ TreasureHiga Eisho (BEGIN)

BEGIN’s vocalist Ei-Show Higa, who hails from Ishigaki City in Okinawa Prefecture, has a distinctive intonation in his vocal phrasing.
His voice gently envelops the listener, and when he sings lyrics and melodies like those in this song, there may be no one who can surpass him.
