Crazy Nightnii hara minoru (LOUDNESS)

This was released in 1985 as the first single for the American market by LOUDNESS, one of Japan’s leading HM/HR bands.

It was produced with Max Norman, known for his work with artists like Ozzy Osbourne.

I first listened to LOUDNESS when I was in my third year of junior high, and I still remember how shocked I was by vocalist Niihara’s incredibly powerful high tones.

He may not be the kind of singer with broad mainstream appeal, but there’s no doubt he has world-class vocal ability.

Anyone aiming to be a singer in HM/HR will find a lot to learn from him!

A digital-only single by Tatsuya Kitani, released in July 2023.

Kitani’s vocals here draw listeners straight into the world of the song.

His masterful switching between chest voice and falsetto, along with vocal techniques that deftly navigate complex rhythms, seize the listener’s heart.

In this track, his expressive singing paints the song’s worldview in vivid color, leaving a deep impression on the audience.

Kitani’s voice conveys emotional highs and lows with unpredictable shifts, possessing a depth that’s hard to grasp after just one listen.

Sung with persuasive expression, this piece also serves excellently as practice material and a reference for honing vocal skills.

My friend — now and forever…Ryoji (Ketsumeishi)

My friend — now and forever...Ryoji (Ketsumeishi)

It’s the 29th single by Ketsumeishi across their indie and major releases, released on April 20, 2016.

It was written as the theme song for the Toho-distributed film “Crayon Shin-chan: Fast Asleep! The Great Assault on the Dreaming World.” It’s also memorable for featuring the comedy trio Dachou Club—of which the late Ryuhei Ueshima was a member—as guest performers in the music video.

As for Ketsumeishi’s singer Ryoji, he’s a wonderful vocalist whose charm lies in a simple yet very pleasant voice rich in higher overtones.

Thanks to that voice, I feel the song’s melody and arrangement—already brimming with gentleness—are brought out even more beautifully.

Let's meet in Yurakucho.Furanku Nagai

Frank Nagai, known for his “captivating low voice,” possessed a uniquely rich baritone.

He built the jazz-tinged genre of mood kayō (mood pop) and debuted in 1955 with “Lover, Come Back to Me.” In 1957, a campaign song for Yurakucho Sogo became a major hit, catapulting him to top-star status.

In 1961, he won the 3rd Japan Record Award with a jazz-style revival of a 1922 popular song.

He also appeared in NHK’s Kōhaku Uta Gassen for 26 consecutive years, among many other achievements.

Frank Nagai’s songs, with their rich low tones and distinctive vocal style, are highly recommended for those interested in mood kayō and jazz.

tearful; moved to tearsKadokawa Hiroshi

Hiroshi Kadokawa is an enka singer from Hiroshima Prefecture.

He debuted in 1976 and drew attention with his song “Namidagurashi.” Since then, he has gained popularity with songs that portray women’s emotions, and one released in 1987 created such a stir that Teresa Teng covered it.

Kadokawa’s greatest appeal is his deeply resonant voice.

Drawing on his experience as a club singer, he has mastered a style that truly moves audiences.

He has also perfected the distinctive enka technique of kobushi (ornamental melisma), captivating many fans with his wide expressive range.

Highly recommended for those who love enka that speaks to the heart.

ancient castleMitsubishi Michiya

Isn’t a truly beautiful voice exactly the kind possessed by someone like Mr.

Mihashi? As you’d expect from a certified master of the Mihashi school of folk singing, many people are still captivated by his powerful, crystal-clear voice.

This song was a massive hit, selling a record-breaking number of copies.

Shadow (kagebōshi)Horiuchi Takao

From around the mid-1970s, Takao Horiuchi was active as a member of Alice, who were scoring major hits in the then-new music scene.

The song I’m introducing today is his 25th single as a solo artist, released in 1993 after Alice disbanded.

While during Alice’s heyday Horiuchi sang with a slightly stronger rock edge than his partner Shinji Tanimura, after going solo he began delivering songs with a somewhat stronger enka flavor, showcasing a matured richness in his vocals.

He’s one of those singers I can confidently recommend to anyone who wants to hear a skillful, sophisticated “adult” vibe.

Since he has an exceptionally long career, it might be fun to listen to his work in chronological order starting from the Alice era!
