[Great Singers] Male vocalists who captivate with vocal power, technique, and expressiveness (81–90)

spring rainMurashita Kōzō

Kozo Murashita is a folk singer whose quiet voice moves the heart.

His song “Hatsukoi” (First Love) is very famous.

It’s said that because his family ran a movie theater and he was exposed to film scores and popular songs from an early age, his melodic sense and emotional expression were honed.

Of course, his singing is wonderful, but above all I’m drawn to the beauty of the Japanese in his lyrics.

Without flashy staging, he was the type to captivate an audience with just a guitar—an authentic singer-songwriter who can rely solely on his voice and melodies.

If you like folk music, be sure to explore his work.

DESIRERYUICHI(LUNA SEA)

This is the sixth single by the Japanese so-called visual kei band LUNA SEA, released on November 13, 1995.

When people talk about visual kei bands, attention often goes more to their looks than to the music itself, the performance, or the singing.

But RYUICHI, the vocalist of LUNA SEA, is, in my opinion, a singer whose voice is both profoundly rich and powerfully compelling.

In DESIRE, the song I’m introducing here, he delivers a wonderful performance, skillfully shaping his voice over a very aggressive track and backing, showcasing his versatility.

This is TUBE’s 18th single, released in May 1994.

It was used in a commercial for the Toyota Corolla Ceres and became a major hit, selling a total of 940,000 copies according to Oricon.

Speaking of TUBE’s vocalist, Nobutaka Maeda, he’s highly praised for his incredible vocal power and his very powerful, soaring high notes—and you can fully enjoy that voice in this song as well.

He’s not just powerful; he also masterfully uses a whispery tone, adding dynamic contrast to his performance.

He’s truly a singer worthy of respect!

Shibuya Gyakutarō’s second digital single, released on February 28, 2020.

By the way, “Shibuya Gyakutarō” is the artist name Ryota Shibuya from SUPER BEAVER uses for his solo work.

When the track started and the vocals came in, I was instantly drawn in by that voice.

I think Shibuya Gyakutarō has a singing voice rich in very pleasant high-order overtones, and his vocal expression and technique that maximize that quality are simply outstanding.

Musically, it’s a mid-tempo track with a slightly swung rhythm—something that often doesn’t suit Japanese lyrics—but he pulls it off beautifully here!

Radio MagicNishida Masafumi (EARTHSHAKER)

This is the second single by EARTHSHAKER, a Japanese HM/HR band from Osaka, released on September 21, 1984.

On album, it appears on their third record, Midnight Flight.

At a time when HM/HR often spotlighted the guitar over vocals, EARTHSHAKER drew attention for their strong emphasis on vocal melody, singing, and expressive delivery in both their songwriting and performance style.

Given the band’s direction, it’s only natural that vocalist Masafumi “Marcy” Nishida’s singing here is exceptional—he’s a singer who is highly regarded even beyond the HM/HR realm.

I Will Get Your KissNakagawa Akinori

Singer-songwriter Akinori Nakagawa is known for his strikingly high vocal tone and sharply defined vocal embellishments.

He is currently active as a musical theater actor as well, and his exceptional singing ability is highly regarded within the musical theater world.

Speaking of Akinori Nakagawa’s signature songs… surely many people think of “I Will Get Your Kiss,” don’t they? While retaining a touch of Japanese pop sensibility, the track weaves in authentic R&B elements, resulting in an exceptionally sweet finish.

If anything, Masaki Suda seems more like an actor by trade, but his vocal ability is quite impressive.

His vocal production—chest voice, mixed voice, and falsetto—connects very smoothly, and his expressiveness is notably high.

There are certainly aspects that feel unpolished, likely stemming from his youth and limited experience as a singer, but that roughness may actually be part of his charm.

He’s one of the singers whose growth from here on out I’m excited to see.

I believe his fundamental vocal technique is more than solid.
