The original TV anime aired in the 1970s, but even more than forty years later, Mizuki delivers a magnificent performance that shows no sign of decline from those days.
Many so-called anisong singers boast exceptional vocal ability, but even among them, Ichiro Mizuki stands out as an extraordinarily outstanding singer.
Fireflies of the NorthMori Shinichi
Ms.
Mori is a true genius singer and has countless classic songs.
This song has lyrics by the renowned Yu Aku, and while it gives a rather dark and eerie impression, only Ms.
Mori can make it work so beautifully when performed.
Among her many famous songs, I feel this one suits her best.
Tsugaru Mountain SongHosokawa Takashi
Takashi Hosokawa is a leading figure in the Japanese enka world.
Although he did not come from a minyo (traditional folk song) background, after his debut he was taught minyo by Michiya Mihashi, and he is known as a singer who mastered not only enka but minyo as well.
When it comes to Hosokawa’s vocal ability, attention naturally turns to his lung capacity.
The stable long tones produced by his tremendous lung capacity are breathtaking, and in terms of fundamental vocal technique, he is among the very best in Japan.
On top of that, he excels at advanced techniques such as kobushi (ornamental melisma), so around his fifties he boasted flawless singing ability in every respect.

Burn!Fuji Kaze
This is a digital-only release by Faye/Fuji Kaze, released on May 3, 2021.
It was reportedly written specifically as the theme song for Honda’s VEZEL commercial.
As for Kaze’s vocals on this track, the contrast between the slightly languid delivery in the A and B sections and the invigorating, refreshing vocals in the chorus is simply exquisite—there’s no other word for it.
In both styles of delivery, his gentle, soft voice is fully utilized, which is part of the song’s appeal.
I felt there’s a lot to learn from the vocal expression showcased in this piece.
Love and romanceTakenaka Yudai (Novelbright)
It’s the lead track from Novelbright’s major-label second full album, Assort, which was released on May 18, 2022.
Yudai Takenaka, the vocalist of Novelbright, is a singer with a wonderfully rich voice full of beautiful high overtones.
Of course, his expressive singing that makes full use of that voice is also fantastic, and in the song we’re featuring here, “Ai toka Koi toka” (“Love or Romance”), you can fully enjoy his gentle, soaring tone and expressive delivery.
When you sing this at karaoke, try not to tighten your throat; aim the sound toward your upper palate.
I think that will bring you closer to his style.

From a high-range head voice that shows no strain at all, to a low-range chest voice that resonates with great stability, and even a mixed voice that connects the two with exceptional smoothness, he masterfully conveys the world of each song through his exquisite use of different vocal techniques.
Among my voice training students, many admire a singing voice like his—especially his use of mixed voice.
He’s definitely a singer I’d love aspiring vocalists to set as one of their goals!
