A male singer with exceptional vocal skills: a powerhouse performer who captivates with volume, technique, and expressiveness.

Have you ever found yourself thinking, “Why does this person’s singing move me so much?” Male vocalists who sing well possess a charm that can’t be explained by technique alone.

Overwhelming vocal power, delicate expressiveness, and the ability to steer the listener’s emotions at will.

In this article, we’ll introduce male singers whose voices are so compelling they give you goosebumps.

You’re sure to discover a new favorite artist who resonates deeply with your heart.

Male singers who are great vocalists: powerful, technically skilled, and expressive performers (71–80)

Prayer of LightKuroda Shunsuke (Kobukuro)

This is Kobukuro’s 32nd single, released in October 2020.

It was chosen as the theme song for the Kansai TV/Fuji TV drama “DIVER: Special Infiltration Unit.” The song features a highly dramatic arrangement, and it’s no exaggeration to say that the first requirement for making such an arrangement work is a singer with solid vocal ability.

Otherwise, the vocals would be overpowered by the backing performance.

The powerful, resonant singing in the chorus is downright goosebump-inducing!

Mazinger Z / INFINITY VersionMizuki Ichirō

This work, which we’re introducing today, is the main theme song of Mazinger Z Infinity, the 2018 remake, sung by Ichiro Mizuki—often hailed as the Emperor of Anisong—and originally the main theme of the popular anime Mazinger Z.

The original TV anime aired in the 1970s, but even more than forty years later, Mizuki delivers a magnificent performance that shows no sign of decline from those days.

Many so-called anisong singers boast exceptional vocal ability, but even among them, Ichiro Mizuki stands out as an extraordinarily outstanding singer.

Fireflies of the NorthMori Shinichi

Ms.

Mori is a true genius singer and has countless classic songs.

This song has lyrics by the renowned Yu Aku, and while it gives a rather dark and eerie impression, only Ms.

Mori can make it work so beautifully when performed.

Among her many famous songs, I feel this one suits her best.

[Great Singers] Male vocalists who captivate with vocal power, technique, and expressiveness (81–90)

Takashi Hosokawa is a leading figure in the Japanese enka world.

Although he did not come from a minyo (traditional folk song) background, after his debut he was taught minyo by Michiya Mihashi, and he is known as a singer who mastered not only enka but minyo as well.

When it comes to Hosokawa’s vocal ability, attention naturally turns to his lung capacity.

The stable long tones produced by his tremendous lung capacity are breathtaking, and in terms of fundamental vocal technique, he is among the very best in Japan.

On top of that, he excels at advanced techniques such as kobushi (ornamental melisma), so around his fifties he boasted flawless singing ability in every respect.

Burn!Fuji Kaze

Burn!Fuji Kaze

This is a digital-only release by Faye/Fuji Kaze, released on May 3, 2021.

It was reportedly written specifically as the theme song for Honda’s VEZEL commercial.

As for Kaze’s vocals on this track, the contrast between the slightly languid delivery in the A and B sections and the invigorating, refreshing vocals in the chorus is simply exquisite—there’s no other word for it.

In both styles of delivery, his gentle, soft voice is fully utilized, which is part of the song’s appeal.

I felt there’s a lot to learn from the vocal expression showcased in this piece.

Love and romanceTakenaka Yudai (Novelbright)

It’s the lead track from Novelbright’s major-label second full album, Assort, which was released on May 18, 2022.

Yudai Takenaka, the vocalist of Novelbright, is a singer with a wonderfully rich voice full of beautiful high overtones.

Of course, his expressive singing that makes full use of that voice is also fantastic, and in the song we’re featuring here, “Ai toka Koi toka” (“Love or Romance”), you can fully enjoy his gentle, soaring tone and expressive delivery.

When you sing this at karaoke, try not to tighten your throat; aim the sound toward your upper palate.

I think that will bring you closer to his style.

Give it a try!

SorryShimizu Shota

As for the characteristics of modern Japanese male R&B singers, while they may not boast the superhuman power and range of their American counterparts, they tend to focus on softer vocal expression and deliver songs that feel approachable to the general listener—and I think Shota Matsuda is one of them.

His slightly androgynous, gentle voice will surely capture the hearts of many.

Of course, his masterful use of mixed voice—a must-have skill for singers in this genre today—and his clean vocal production are impeccable.

On top of that, depending on the song, he actively incorporates pitch-correction techniques, mixing in that intentionally ‘cherpy’ autotune-like effect, which is a very on-trend touch.
