Let's Make and Display! Origami Perfect for Halloween
Halloween is a big hit in Japan too!
Many children probably have Halloween parties at home, daycare, or kindergarten.
In this article, we’ll introduce Halloween origami that’s perfect for party decorations!
We’ve gathered all kinds of designs like jack-o’-lanterns, ghosts, and witches—must-haves for Halloween.
It’s also a great activity to enjoy during the Halloween season!
Be sure to make them together with friends and family, and have a wonderful Halloween.
Let's make and display! Origami perfect for Halloween (1–10)
How to fold blinking eyesNEW!

How about some blinking eyes that look a bit eerie in the dark? They’re perfect for Halloween toys, too! First, fold a piece of origami paper in half into a triangle to make a crease, then fold both ends inward toward this crease three times.
Next, fold it in half from the other direction to make another crease, and fold both ends toward the center along that crease.
Shape the whole piece into an eye by folding the straight edges diagonally.
Attach a handle, and the eye is complete! Finish it by adding a separately made drawing of an eye in the center and gluing on eyelashes around it.
Halloween candy holder

Saying “Trick or treat!” and going around to get sweets is a Halloween tradition, right? How about handmaking a Halloween candy holder out of origami for when you go to collect treats? It’s a cute, tiny mini bag that fits about one piece of candy or chocolate, so it should be perfect as a favor or prize holder at Halloween parties and events! We’ve also included videos showing how to fold ghost and pumpkin decorations to add a nice touch to the bag, so be sure to check them out for reference.
Halloween wreath

How about making a “Halloween wreath” out of origami that combines a ghost pumpkin wearing a witch’s hat with a black cat—perfect for Halloween? You won’t need any glue or scissors! You’ll make four black cats, four ghost pumpkins, and four witch hats separately, then interlock them at the end to form a wreath.
It may look difficult at first, but there’s a lot of repetition, so I don’t think it’s that hard! Enjoy making it together with your family and friends.
coffin

Let us introduce a Halloween origami craft that parents and kids can enjoy together: a “coffin.” Even something with a dark image like a coffin becomes pop and cute when made with origami! It’s very simple, so even small children should be able to make it.
For the coffin’s cross, use red or gold origami cut into shape for extra impact! There are also instructions for an easy-to-make ghost, so why not add them to your Halloween decorations? This is recommended for preschool or kindergarten activities and for at-home fun during the Halloween season.
pumpkin lamp

Pumpkin lanterns are a classic Halloween decoration, aren’t they? To make a pumpkin lantern out of origami, you’ll need orange origami paper, scissors, and double-sided tape, so if you don’t have them, pick them up in advance at a 100-yen shop or similar store.
The key to this origami is how well you can recreate the slits cut into the pumpkin.
Making the slit sections requires repeating fine, detailed work, so it may take time if you’re not used to it.
Also, instead of drawing the face directly with a marker, you cut it out with scissors, which makes it a bit more challenging.
For that reason, it’s recommended for people who are already comfortable with origami!
church

A church made of origami is a perfect item for Halloween—it exudes a mysterious atmosphere just by displaying it alongside witch costumes and other Halloween decorations.
It’s also nice that it can be made with simple steps, like “folding a triangle back to make a square, then turning that into a tall rectangle.” For a finishing touch, try attaching a silver cross accessory—something you can even get at a 100-yen shop—to the top of the castle; it instantly transforms into a more authentic decoration.
skeleton

When it comes to cool Halloween motifs, “skeletons” are hard to beat, right? Here’s a Halloween origami idea that turns a typically spooky skeleton into something cute.
Kids can enjoy it without feeling scared, so it’s perfect for the Halloween season.
For the skeleton’s eyes and nose, you can either paste on pieces of origami paper cut with a craft punch or simply draw them with a pen.
Using glow-in-the-dark origami paper can be fun, too.
It’s relatively easy to make an adorable skeleton, so enjoy decorating with them at school or at home.
Spider web
We’re introducing a Halloween origami “spiderweb” that makes a striking, eye-catching accent for your Halloween decorations.
Fold the paper and cut with scissors—fun to make and adorable to display! The step where you sketch a guide and cut with scissors can be detailed and challenging.
Be sure to draw a clear draft, and consider shading the sections to be removed so it’s easy to understand where to cut.
It will look gorgeous not only in black, but also with Halloween colors like purple and orange, or with shiny origami paper in gold or silver!
bat

Bats with their eerie image are a classic Halloween motif, aren’t they? How about trying Halloween origami that transforms those dark-looking bats into something cute? It’s also great for folding while playing with your kids.
The charm is that you can make one easily with a single sheet of origami paper! You can use colorful papers like pastels, or of course go with dark shades like black or gray.
If you decorate your school with them for Halloween, they might draw some attention.
jack-o’-lantern

If you have orange origami paper, the one I’d love you to try is the jack-o’-lantern.
It’s that spooky pumpkin with a carved face—an essential character for Halloween.
Some steps involve fine folds, so it might be a bit tricky for small children, but it should be fine with a little help from mom or dad.
Once it’s folded, draw the face with a pen to finish it off.
You could even fold a hat out of black origami paper.
Definitely try making it as a Halloween decoration!
