For Seniors: Simple and Fun! November Recreation Ideas
Here are some November activities and recreations we recommend for older adults.
As November arrives, the scenery begins to shift from autumn to winter, and the temperatures drop quite a bit.
It’s a season where you can enjoy a different kind of seasonal beauty than in the height of autumn, but many older adults may find it hard to move as they’d like due to the cold and end up staying indoors.
With that in mind, this article gathers seasonal games and recreational activities that can be enjoyed indoors.
These ideas are also great for community gatherings and day service settings.
We hope everyone has fun together!

oral exercises

Are you familiar with the term “oral frailty”? It refers to a decline in the functions of the mouth—such as chewing, swallowing, and speaking.
Because oral health is considered connected to overall health, preventing oral frailty is very important.
That’s where oral exercises come in.
By changing the order of the vowels “a-i-u-e-o,” varying the pitch and speed, and consciously moving your mouth widely as you vocalize, you can turn it into a workout for your mouth—an important first step in preventing oral frailty.
Classics

Since it’s the season of art, it would be nice to try some art-like recreation, wouldn’t it? If we’re going to do it, how about a recreation where we take our time carefully reading and interpreting Japanese classics? The classics that made no sense back in our student days can resonate deeply when we read them again later in life.
Please take this chance to rediscover the spirit of Japan.
Coloring book

There are many expressions that include “autumn,” but perhaps the most famous is “the autumn of art.” As a recreation related to the arts, coloring is highly recommended.
While coloring is often thought of as something for children, many coloring books for adults are now available.
By taking your time with it, you can stimulate both your hands and your brain!
Shogi

Autumn is often said to be perfect for outings, but of course it’s also totally fine to relax and have fun indoors! One great option for times like these is shogi, a classic game that’s been loved for generations.
Many seniors are familiar with it, and teaching it to your children or grandchildren can help strengthen family bonds.
You can enjoy using your mind while you play, and it’s great mental exercise, so shogi is highly recommended for older adults!
Shogi piece stacking game

It’s a game where you flip over pieces on a shogi board and pick them up using only one finger.
If you make even the slightest sound, you lose your turn and it passes to your opponent.
In the end, the player who has taken more pieces wins.
Keep your ears sharp so you don’t miss any sounds.
