For Seniors: Simple and Fun! November Recreation Ideas

Here are some November activities and recreations we recommend for older adults.

As November arrives, the scenery begins to shift from autumn to winter, and the temperatures drop quite a bit.

It’s a season where you can enjoy a different kind of seasonal beauty than in the height of autumn, but many older adults may find it hard to move as they’d like due to the cold and end up staying indoors.

With that in mind, this article gathers seasonal games and recreational activities that can be enjoyed indoors.

These ideas are also great for community gatherings and day service settings.

We hope everyone has fun together!

Write a letter

Make picture letters with Japanese fabric! No. 1. Perfect for day-service recreation and seasonal crafts.
Write a letter

There’s a phrase in Japanese that goes “Autumn is the season for art.” Perfect for autumn crafts, here’s a doubly delightful project that’s fun to make and sure to please as a gift: “e-tegami,” or illustrated postcards! Let’s give it an autumnal touch by using Japanese-style fabrics as motifs and turning them into postcard art.

The method is simple.

First, prepare a template, then place it on fabric that you’ve pre-backed with double-sided tape and cut along the template.

That way, the fabric turns into stickers.

It feels like doing a collage, doesn’t it? You can also use leftover fabric scraps you have at home, so be sure to put them to good use and give this a try!

rod soccer

As we get older, even if we want to exercise, it becomes hard to run around to our heart’s content.

Sports that involve lots of running outdoors, like soccer or baseball, can be challenging.

But with a bit of creativity, you can still enjoy the same feeling! With this stick soccer game, you imagine the stick as your legs and move it with your hands to control the ball and aim for the goal.

You can even play while seated, so it’s highly recommended.

Fishing game

[Yūyū-kyo] Day Service: Fish-Catching Game
Fishing game

For older adults, it can sometimes be difficult to go outside for recreational activities.

In such cases, a recommended indoor activity is a homemade fishing game.

In this game, you draw fish on paper, attach paper clips, and use a magnet at the end of a fishing line to catch them.

Mixing in high-end fish or unusual deep-sea fish that people don’t usually see can make it even more exciting! Since it’s a seated activity, it’s easy for older adults to enjoy.

Occupation Sorting Quiz

[Letter Rearrangement Quiz] Guess the Occupation ✏️✨ “Daily Mini Brain Training”
Occupation Sorting Quiz

November 23 is Labor Thanksgiving Day.

To mark this occasion and express our gratitude to everyone who works, let’s try a job title rearrangement quiz! It’s also a great idea to include it in November events at senior facilities or as a recreation activity in day services.

The rules are simple: rearrange the randomly ordered hiragana to form the name of an occupation.

At first, try the ones with fewer characters, then gradually increase the number of characters to raise the difficulty—also GOOD! This quiz is effective for brain training and dementia prevention, so be sure to enjoy it together with older adults.

Autumn is often called the “season of art,” so why not try making some autumn-themed crafts? Let’s make classic autumn motifs—dragonflies, pampas grass, and burnet—out of paper.

Do you know burnet (waremoko)? It’s a cute flower with a plump, round shape in a purple hue.

These days you can easily find colored construction paper at 100-yen shops.

It’s easy to make, so give it a try!
