For Seniors: Simple and Fun! November Recreation Ideas

Here are some November activities and recreations we recommend for older adults.

As November arrives, the scenery begins to shift from autumn to winter, and the temperatures drop quite a bit.

It’s a season where you can enjoy a different kind of seasonal beauty than in the height of autumn, but many older adults may find it hard to move as they’d like due to the cold and end up staying indoors.

With that in mind, this article gathers seasonal games and recreational activities that can be enjoyed indoors.

These ideas are also great for community gatherings and day service settings.

We hope everyone has fun together!

Origami ‘Persimmon’

With just one sheet of origami! How to fold a persimmon (origami persimmon)
Origami 'Persimmon'

When it comes to familiar autumn flavors that ripen in the garden, persimmons come to mind, don’t they? How about folding a persimmon using double-sided origami? It’s also great fine-motor practice, so we recommend it as an autumn recreation activity for seniors.

We’ll use double-sided origami with light green and orange on one sheet, but if you don’t have it, you can substitute by gluing together two sheets of different colors.

Seniors who played with origami in the past might enjoy it while reminiscing.

Make lots of them and use them to decorate the walls—it’ll look wonderful!

When you walk through parks or mountains in autumn, you see all sorts of things on the ground—fallen leaves, twigs, and more.

Did you know all of those can become wonderful craft materials? Here, we’ll show you how to make a star-shaped ornament by securing twigs with string or wire! It’s an easy, super-cute craft that uses seasonal materials—what’s not to love? Battery-powered string lights are inexpensive these days, so adding a bit of sparkle would make it even cuter.

It’s a little early, but a star ornament also makes a lovely decoration as we head toward Christmas.

In conclusion

We introduced some recommended activities and recreational games for November—how did you like them? We focused on safe, seated games, but when you move your body, be sure to warm up with a bit of light stretching beforehand.

Through November’s recreations, take your time and soak in this wonderful season where autumn and winter blend together.
