NTT’s TV commercials often feature clever concepts—some are funny, others are striking and memorable.
The music they use also includes many catchy songs that stick in your head.
But even if you find a song you like, you might think, “I’ve heard this so many times, but I don’t know the artist or the title!” If I can help answer those questions, I’d be delighted.
With a star-studded cast—including Gen Hoshino, who’s also active as an actor, comedian Naomi Watanabe, and the promising actress Kanna Hashimoto—the ads are a feast to watch.

Wherever you areONE OK ROCK

It’s one of ONE OK ROCK’s signature songs, beloved and often sung at weddings.
It was featured as the first installment of the series “All Emotions: Family Edition” in a Docomo commercial.
Even if you don’t know the band or the title, you’ve probably heard it.
It sings of human warmth, family love, and a great, encompassing love—and though it’s a song from 2010, it feels bigger as time goes by.
The linked commercial footage and live performances really draw you in emotionally.
Taka’s deeply expressive vocals make me tear up every time I listen.
Story of My LifeOne Direction

This is the NTT Docomo commercial “Docomo no Gakuwari 2014” that aired in 2014, featuring the vocal group One Direction, who went on hiatus in 2016.
At that time, the group still had five members.
In the ad, presented like an interview, each member talks about memories from their childhood and student days.
Then the five of them head toward a dazzling stage.
The commercial conveys a supportive message aimed at people currently living their student lives.
When spring comesmiwa

A cute, spring-like number by Miwa that perfectly fits NTT Docomo’s “Hang in there, exam takers!” CM theme.
The commercial features actor Shota Sometani and actress Yuko Araki.
The lyrics depict the clumsy feelings of someone with an unrequited crush who still can’t confess their love, even though the spring season of meetings and farewells is just around the corner.
Reflecting those lyrics, the CM shows Sometani struggling to express his feelings honestly to the girl he likes, analyzing her expressions and reactions in his head.
The combination of the CM and the bittersweet lyrics will make your heart flutter!
Just call it lovemafumafu

A number by Mafumafu, a vocalist, singer-songwriter, and also the singer for the duo After the Rain alongside fellow utaite Soraru.
The NTT Docomo commercial featuring this song stars Kanna Hashimoto and Minami Hamabe.
Mafumafu wrote the song specifically for a web video that captures the two actresses, playing high school girls, looking back on three years of high school through photos taken on their smartphones.
With Mafumafu’s characteristically skillful wordplay, the lyrics sing of days overflowing with love spent with friends—memories that will live on in the heart until the very end of one’s life.
FlySMAP

It’s the 30th single, released in 1999, which was used as the theme song for an NTT East Japan commercial.
A fun bit of trivia: it was SMAP’s last 8cm single.
The commercial, with the five members shrunk down and sitting on a sofa, was adorable.
It’s a warm, SMAP-like support song that gently encourages people when they’re feeling down.
You’d be happy to have someone speak to you like this, right? Despite being titled “Fly,” it leaves a strong impression of being firmly grounded, and now that the group has disbanded, it carries an especially poignant meaning.
Tomorrow as wellSHISHAMO

A SHISHAMO track that was featured as the song for a commercial starring Shinichi Tsutsumi, Go Ayano, and Mitsuki Takahata.
In the ad, the members of SHISHAMO also appear, performing Ashita mo in a live scene.
Although it wasn’t released as a single, it’s included on the album SHISHAMO 4 and, thanks in part to its use in the commercial, is known as one of SHISHAMO’s signature songs.
It’s a motivational song that says: even though working or school can be tough and discouraging, let’s keep doing our best again tomorrow!

Close to You (Japanese title: Haruka Naru Kage)Hezā Uddzu
The song playing in the NTT Docomo commercial featuring renowned supporting actor Ken Mitsuishi is “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” which has been covered by many artists.
It was first released by the composer Burt Bacharach, and later became internationally famous through the Carpenters’ cover.
The version in the Docomo commercial is yet another cover arranged specifically for the ad.
The calm, gentle vocals evoke the Carpenters’ rendition and are quite soothing.
They tenderly envelop Ken Mitsuishi, who plays someone making their smartphone debut, and his family.
