Tchaikovsky: From the piano pieces The Seasons — June: Barcarolle, Op. 37b No. 6
JunePyotr Tchaikovsky

It is one piece from a set of twelve piano works in which he depicts the sights and traditions of his homeland, Russia, month by month.

In Russia, the way seasons are counted differs by one month, so June corresponds to our July.

Although the pieces were originally commissioned as part of a music magazine project, this particular piece is especially popular among the twelve.

Piano Suite “The Seasons” June: BarcarollePyotr Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky’s piano cycle The Seasons depicts all twelve months in music, written to appear monthly in a Russian music magazine from the January to the December 1876 issues.

While a barcarolle (boat song) is usually composed in 6/8 time, the piece “June: Barcarolle” is written in 4/4; nevertheless, its boat-like rocking rhythm feels completely natural.

“The Seasons” – 12 Characteristic Pieces, Op. 37bis: October “Autumn Song”Pyotr Tchaikovsky

Pyotr Tchaikovsky, the great composer who has had a profound influence on modern artists.

Tchaikovsky created many masterpieces, but the one I especially recommend is The Seasons – 12 Characteristic Pieces, Op.

37bis: October, “Autumn Song.” This cycle portrays both the lives of ordinary people through the seasons and the seasons themselves.

In this particular piece, the dark melody—imbued with a poignant sense of longing, like autumn’s arrival and the falling of leaves—is especially captivating.

“The Four Seasons” – 12 Characteristic Pieces, Op. 37a: October, “Autumn Song”Pyotr Tchaikovsky

Pyotr Tchaikovsky, a great composer who represents modern music.

He created many masterpieces, but one I especially recommend is “The Seasons – 12 Characteristic Pieces, Op.

37a: October ‘Autumn Song.’” This piece, from the famous cycle The Seasons, portrays autumn and beautifully captures its melancholy and poignancy.

The melody isn’t merely dark; rather, it’s characterized by a focus on transience and compassion.

Coronation Festival MarchPyotr Tchaikovsky

Coronation Festival MarchPyotr Tchaikovsky

Composed by Tchaikovsky.

Perhaps because he’s a national great composer, his music was played a lot at the Sochi Olympics opening and closing ceremonies.

This festive march was written for the coronation of Tsar Alexander III of Russia, and it indeed combines splendor with solemnity.

Ukrainian language Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 2 “Little Russia (Ukraine)”
Symphony No. 2Pyotr Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky is often associated with a melancholy image rich in Russian national color, but his Symphony No.

2, “Little Russian,” is a cheerful work.

Because it boldly incorporates three Ukrainian folk songs, it is also sometimes subtitled “Ukrainian.”

The Nutcracker Ballet Suite: Dance of the Sugar Plum FairyPyotr Tchaikovsky

The Nutcracker Ballet Suite: Dance of the Sugar Plum FairyPyotr Tchaikovsky

The ballet The Nutcracker was created based on the French adaptation of German Romantic writer E.

T.

A.

Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy features celesta melodies that sound like a music box, evoking a fairy-like atmosphere.

The bassoon’s low-register melody creates a magical mood.

Waltz from Act I of Swan LakePyotr Tchaikovsky

The “chaan-chararara~” part from Act II, ‘Scene,’ is extremely famous, and while that piece is indeed melancholy, the waltz from Act I—being a ballet piece, of course—is also elegant.

Yet the music is so beautiful that it becomes moving and even brings tears to your eyes in places.

The ‘Waltz of the Flowers’ from The Nutcracker is also a beautiful piece, but Swan Lake has a more grand, majestic feeling.

The Nutcracker, No. 8: Waltz of the Flowers, Op. 71aPyotr Tchaikovsky

It begins with a beautiful harp solo, followed by the horn presenting the theme with a refreshing clarity.

The strings then join, and that famous waltz appears.

This is the finale of The Nutcracker, a dazzling scene in which a total of 24 attendants of the Sugar Plum Fairy dance in the ballet.

Slavonic MarchPyotr Tchaikovsky

Slavonic MarchPyotr Tchaikovsky

Amateur orchestras often perform this piece as the first item on the program, and its length, fullness, and accessibility make it well-suited to opening a concert.

The viola solo at the beginning has an unmistakably exotic melody that hints at an Eastern European flavor.
