In this article, we introduce recreation activities you can enjoy safely even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
At day service centers and other senior facilities, a variety of recreational activities are held every day.
However, during periods when COVID-19 and other infectious diseases are spreading, worries are never-ending.
So we’ve gathered activities that can be enjoyed while maintaining distance—such as those for small groups or done in turns.
What’s more, they can all be done while seated, making them enjoyable for wheelchair users and those who are unsteady standing.
You may also find that more people will casually join in, thinking, “If it’s something I can do while sitting, I’ll give it a try.”

Shoulder joint exercises

Shoulder joint exercises are movements where you move your hands and shoulders to a rhythm to expand the shoulder’s range of motion, which tends to become limited during colder seasons.
As your shoulder mobility improves, the muscles around your neck also loosen up, positively affecting the autonomic nervous system—so they’re highly recommended.
Once you get used to it, try gradually increasing the speed to raise the exercise intensity!
Prefecture Bingo

A bingo game loved by kids and adults alike! Normally, bingo cards have numbers, but in this version the squares are labeled with prefecture names.
Prepare at least two full sets of cards with the names of Japan’s 47 prefectures.
Increase the number of sets according to how many people are playing.
Each player lays out nine cards labeled with prefecture names in a 3×3 grid in front of them.
You can use more cards if you like! Then, using a separate set of cards from the ones you laid out, draw one card at a time.
If the drawn prefecture matches one on your grid, flip that card over.
From there, it’s just like regular bingo: when you flip all the cards along any vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line, you’ve got bingo! Just like standard bingo, you can enjoy this game while seated.
Baseball card game

This is a card game where, just like real baseball, players alternate between offense and defense to try to score points.
For defense, you prepare ball cards that show different pitch types, and for offense, you prepare bat cards that show pitch types.
At a signal, both players reveal their cards while trying to predict the opponent’s choice.
If the pitch type on the cards matches, the offensive player scores points, so the key is the mind game of anticipating your opponent’s card.
It’s a game that gives your brain a workout through prediction while also naturally sparking conversations about baseball.
A bingo game that uses both the head and the body to have fun

This is a game where you toss beanbags into targets arranged in a grid, aiming to line up a row.
By adjusting the number and size of the squares and the distance to the targets, you can tailor the rules to the participants and make it exciting.
The key is how you throw the beanbags so they reach the targets; it helps build concentration for gauging distances to far objects and for adjusting throwing strength.
Assess your own abilities carefully and decide which targets you’re more likely to reach.
Oral exercises before meals

Do you know about mouth exercises before meals? Doing mouth movements and vocal warm-ups can make mealtimes more enjoyable.
Just by moving your tongue and using your voice, you can strengthen the muscles in your mouth.
Singing together is a fun way to refresh both mind and body.
People who use wheelchairs can easily join in, so why not enjoy it together? Chat with friends while doing the exercises and have fun.
It’s sure to be a wonderful time filled with smiles.
